Six cardboard cards with photos of Canadian Senators

While the Conservatives debated ways to lower public servants’ wages and loosen gun regulations on theplenary floor, a new set of humorous trading cards started circulating the convention floor among the media, at least. MP Peter Julian introduced the NDP’s 99-card “Hall of Shame” deck, depicting all current Senators. Each card shows a photo of the Senator on the front, while the back shows a brief bio, appointment and retirement dates, and the estimated total cost of their tenure.

For example, the Mike Duffy card notes he was appointed December 22, 2008, and must retire no later than May 27, 2021. He was Stephen Harper’s third appointment to the Senate, and represents “Prince Edward Island???” The total ordinary cost of his salary and office as Senator would be $1,853,381.

“We’re actually giving them [the cards] away because we think Canadians should know more about their senators,” said Julian. “The more they know about Conservative and Liberal senators,  I think the more likely Canadians are going to join with the NDP to abolish the senate.”
