The NDP’s finance critic Peggy Nash entered the race for the NDP leadership on Friday, Oct. 28.

The Parkdale-High Park MP and the sole woman candidate currently in the race, her reference to the next prime ministers as “she” brought loud cheers from supporters at her press conference. Nash also has long-standing ties with labour, with many from the movement at the press conference also.

Nash is the seventh candidate in a list to succeed Layton that includes NDP strategist Brian Topp, deputy leader Thomas Mulcair, Ottawa MP Paul Dewer, B.C. MP Nathan Cullen, Quebec MP Roméo Saganash and Nova Scotia businessman Martin Singh.

Other candidates are expected to declare shortly. The vote for Jack Layton’s successor is due to take place on March 24, 2012.
