Two Saturday Marches. Two Perspectives. Both are meeting at Queen’s Park (College Street and University Avenue) at 1:00 pm. Both intend to march South along University Avenue.

One march plans to make a sharp right on Queen Street, taking marches away from the security parameter and leading it back to Queen’s Park.

The other plans to attempt to continue South along University Avenue to confront  one of the the physical manifestation of the G20 Summit — the fence.

The two marches (listed on alpha-order).

Get Off the Fence march: March planned to continue South down University Avenue towards the security fence.

Organizers biggest concern regarding this march is that labour marshals will prevent activists from continuing South down University towards the fence.

Southern Ontario Anarchist Resistance (SOAR): “This action will be militant and confrontational, seeking to humiliate the security apparatus and make Toronto’s elites regret letting the dang G20 in here.”

Labour / NGO / Peace March:

March planned to turn right on Queen Street, not approach the security fence.

Organizers biggest concern regarding this march is that it will be “hijacked” by those seeking confrontation with the security parameter.

Sid Ryan expressed this view in the Toronto Star article, stating: “‘If anyone’s got any intention of using the cover of the labour protest march to cause trouble, they have to think twice because we will have children in our march. I don’t want to see our message being lost,’ said Sid Ryan, president of the Ontario Federation of Labour.”

As everyone has read by now, I’m a supporter of Diversity of Tactics. So the last things I want to see is 1: children and elders getting hurt and 2: a kind of punch-up division between activists right when we need each other most.

I do have to say that I am not impressed with any sort of political posturing from any faction of the movement that pulls the Bush card, “You’re either with us or against us.”

I remember the press covering last week’s People’s Summit asked a friend of mine who was making art, “are you for or against violence?”

WTF! (Sorry, but that calls for a WTF!)

How come nobody ever asks the police if they are for or against violence regarding their tactics?
