SECOND LIFE âe" On Monday, May 14th at 6:00 p.m. PT (9:00 p.m. ET) author Kyo Maclear will discuss her critically acclaimed new novel The Letter Opener (HarperCollins Canada) in âeoeavatarâe form at the rabble.ca home in the virtual world of Second Life. Irrepressibly charismatic writer, broadcaster and rabble podcaster Cathi Bond will host and lead the discussion as her avatar Babe Lilliehook.
A writer and occasional art critic, Maclear is the author of Beclouded Visions: Hiroshima-Nagasaki and the Art of Witness. Her essays and fiction have appeared in various North American journals and magazines including Toronto Life, Saturday Night, The Globe and Mail, This Magazine and Brick. She lives in Toronto with her partner and their two young sons. The Letter Opener is Maclearâe(TM)s first novel, which tells the story of Naiko, an employee in the Undeliverable Mail Office, a cavernous space that resembles a giant, congested pawnshop. Immersed in things lost and missing, she searches for clues to match undeliverable mail with addresses, a job that allows her to achieve a semblance of order in a disorderly world. It is a shock, then, when Naikoâe(TM)s co-worker Andrei, an enigmatic Romanian refugee who has become the unlikely object of Naikoâe(TM)s fascination, suddenly vanishes.
