Janice M. Bernier is a contributor to rabble's Retiree Matters column. Janice is a retired member of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada (CEP), and a current member of ACTRA-Saskatchewan and the Saskatoon Musicians Association (CFM-AFM) Local 553. She serves on the executives of the Saskatchewan Federation of Union Retirees (SFUR), the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) and the Unemployed Workers Help Centre of Saskatchewan. She has been a long-time activist, volunteer and supporter of the New Democratic Party, United Way, Labour Council and many other community non-profit organizations.

When medicare was introduced in Saskatchewan in July of 1962, I was six years old and about to start Grade 1. When I look back, I am amazed at how much a child will absorb, remember and learn. Growing up in Saskatchewan during the health-care debates helped shape who I am today.
