Quebec Veal Industry Horror

By: Victor Malarek CTV W5 Senior Reporter, Published on Sat Apr 19 2014

Baby calves, just weeks old, are kicked, punched, slapped and yelled at by barn employees. Some are grabbed by the testicles to force them into narrow wooden stalls. Several lie gasping for air on slats stained with urine and feces.

These are among the disturbing images revealed in undercover video footage shot by Mercy for Animals Canada, an anti-cruelty animal activist group, at a milk-fed-veal complex in Pont Rouge, outside Quebec City. It was obtained by CTV’s W5 as part of its investigative report on the Quebec veal industry.

Lifetime electric skillet probe - cord - control?

Someone gave me a Lifetime stainless steel electric skillet, made by West Bend. There is a lot of crap about "waterless cooking", but it looks like a good, solid electric braising pan in a non-reactive material.

But there is no cord. It takes a WB-1 cord - different from the standard probe control cords I have, and nowhere here has any.

Any idea what I can do? I really like this pan - it is very hard to find them without a non-stick coating.

babble book club: 'Salt: A World History'

Up next: 'Salt: A World History' by Mark Kurlansky with a final discussion date of March 21 at 2pm EST where more users will be online to discuss the book in real time, but of course, conversation and discussion is encouraged throughout the reading time.

This book is a bit of a departure for the bbc, or at least according to the cover. Why? Well, it's about salt. Not politics, not CanLit, not activism, but salt. But of course, in the hands of a good writer, who knows what the wonderful topic, and seasoning, salt will bring us!

Here's a snippet of the summary:

Canada pension disability benefits with no drug coverage

Today it occurred to me that many might not know that CPPD is the ONLY disability support program that does not offer drug coverage. Today I received a call from CAMH that a long term client had been involuntarily hospitalized. Due to the ice storm he had to chose between replacing food or paying for his psychotropic medication. He bought food. This must be corrected.

Montreal superhospital métro station won't be wheelchair accessible

A huge pile of money has been poured into the new English-language superhospital in NDG, but the Vendôme métro station, which serves this new hospital complex, will not be made wheelchair accessible with a lift.

The Jean-Talon métro, not far from where I live, is undergoing renovations at one entrance, and will have a lift for people in wheelchairs, parents pushing strollers, and others who are temporarily or permanently less mobile. This station serves two lines, but does not directly serve a hospital - there is a hospital nearby, one station east of Jean-Talon; it is much smaller than this new one planned.

Montreal CBC Daybreak speaking to a disabled advocate about this outrageous (and penny-wise and pound-foolish) oversight.
