A national Holocaust monument is welcome, but the Conservative ideology behind it is not

Last week, the House of Commons unanimously passed a private member's bill to establish a national Holocaust monument. While it is a good thing to commemorate the suffering of Jews in Europe, it is important to point out that uncritical support for Israel is part of the backdrop.

Edmonton Conservative MP Tim Uppal, who introduced the private member's bill, explained last year: "After I had decided on [accepting Minister Peter Kent's proposal to put forward An Act to Establish a National Holocaust Monument], I ended up going to Israel with the Canada Israel Committee in July. Being there, and learning what I did about the Holocaust and Israel, just made me feel more reassured that this was the right thing to do and get this bill passed."

'Delegitimization' is the new anti-semitism

In Israelspeak, "delegitimization" is the new anti-semitism -- the latter word having been so misused and trivialized that it is no longer an effective stick against legitimate criticism. The Israeli think-tank REUT (Vision) Institute identified and advised on how to combat the so-called delegitimization campaign. Blinkers seem to be de rigueur for all Israel's foot soldiers, resulting in the blind leading the blind.

Professor Michael Keefer discusses his latest book:

ANTISEMITISM REAL AND IMAGINED

In the introduction of his new book Antisemitism Real and Imagined: Responses to the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Antisemitism Prof Michael Keefer exposes the political extremism of the CPCCA's prime movers, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney (Conservative) and former Justice Minister and Attorney General Irwin Cotler (Liberal), and their all-too-obvious agenda of using an imagined ‘new antisemitism' as a justification for stigmatizing and even criminalizing criticism of the state of Israel.

The final report of the CPCCA is expected to be released soon.

Or you can play the Jewish card

Stephen Harper's China trip, like last month's India visit, is largely about fishing for ethnic votes back home. That's foreign policy for you.

How to really fight anti-Semitism

We often hear the charge that taking a firm stand for Palestinian rights is somehow anti-Semitic. What is anti-Semitism? Here are some common definitions:

-“Belief or behavior hostile toward Jews just because they are Jewish.” (Anti-Defamation League)

-“Anti-Jewish racism,” which emphasizes the “innate hostility of Jews to the interests of non-Jews.” (Political Dictionary)

-“Hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious group or ‘race.’” (Britannica Concise Encyclopedia)
