Cineplex Entertainment and D Films Corporation are pleased to announce the launch of a four-part series of live performances from the world-renowned Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, Russia. Each performance will be captured live in High Definition (HD) and digital surround sound and broadcast via satellite to select Cineplex Entertainment cinemas across Canada. Keeping with Cineplex's tradition in bringing the seasonal favourite, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, to cinema audiences, this will be the first live performance of the series.
The Nutcracker is Ballet Jörgen Canada's newest full-length ballet and a true Canadian tradition. Created by acclaimed choreographer Bengt Jörgen to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's well-loved score, this delightful version of the timeless classic is born from a collaboration with Kleinburg's world-renowned McMichael Canadian Art Collection.
An intimate event featuring snippets of works from Bengt Jörgen's Cinderella and Coppélia and Robert Desrosiers' Rendezvous!
$25 Adults / $15 Students and FREE for GBC Students, Staff, Faculty & BJC Alumni! Reservations Advised: call or e-mail us. Click here for more info.
Evening performances will feature the innovative contemporary ballet, Coppélia. This whimsical presentation begins when Dr. Coppélius creates a beautiful life-sized dancing doll. The comedic love story unfolds with local villager Nathanael becoming so infatuated with the doll that he casts aside his sweetheart Klara, who enacts her revenge by dressing as the doll and pretending to come to life.
The young people's production The Emperor's New Clothes is a delightfully humorous retelling of the well-loved fairytale, and the daytime performances are an excellent introduction to ballet for little ones
Surrender to the seduction. Carmen will be performed from June 6 - 14 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Italian choreographer, Davide Bombana, re-invents Carmen while staying true to Bizet's opera. Bombana sheds superficialities and draws from the narrative to animate pure, naked emotions with fresh ideas about movement and staging. See how fate, violence, love, and destruction collide in Carmen.
Skin Divers will take you on a spiritual journey. Augmenting her choreography with spoken word and ephemeral visual projections, Canadian choreographer, Dominique Dumais, explores the concept of "the body as a living archive of experience, or a museum of memory."
Experience the romantic classic Giselle at its finest, from May 27 - 31 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. Choreographed by Sir Peter Wright, Giselle combines great emotional and technical intensity to bring to life a romantic tragedy of supernatural proportions. This Summer Season, Principal Dancer Chan Hon Goh returns to take the lead role of the gentle, psychologically fragile Giselle. This is the last chance to see her onstage as she will retire from dance at the end of this season.
