The BC NDP at 50: Looking back, looking forward

Speaking at the BC NDP 50th Anniversary Convention, BC Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair described his election campaign war chest as over 500,000 strong, the members of the BC Fed affiliated unions.

Sinclair gave the figures for the margin of victory by the provincial Liberals in the last two elections: an increase in NDP votes cast of 2,500 in 2005 and of 3,800 votes in 2009 would have produced a different outcome. The obvious conclusion is that the role of labour in getting out the vote is likely to prove decisive in the next B.C. election, expected in May 2013.

'We Are One': Images from a cross-border labour solidarity rally

On Saturday, April 2, a "We Are One" rally was jointly organized by the B.C. Federation of Labour and the Washington and Oregon arms of the AFL-CIO and its labour councils. Held on the U.S. side of the international Peace Arch border crossing, at our count more than two thousand rallied in solidarity with workers in Wisconsin.

Coalition to build a better BC launches

Building a coalition of 34 groups, including organized labour, education, seniors, anti-poverty, aboriginal, women, student and other movements, is no small accomplishment. A result of at least four months of meetings, The Coalition to Build a Better BC has done just this. The coalition kicked off with a rally in Downtown Vancouver, Saturday, April 10th.

A diverse and spirited crowd showed up in glorious sunshine to show their support for public and community services. Under Gordon Campbell it has been cuts, cuts, cuts for everyone but big business, which instead finds itself rewarded.
