This week, we’re reporting back on the latest piece of the campaign to demand choice in Canada’s cell phone market, and we’re taking a quick look at the state of your online privacy.

The notorious online "snooping" bill, C-30, looks like it may be coming back for round two. Earlier this year, the government rolled out legislation to enhance police powers in the cyber age. Bill C-30 would allow police to gather telecommunications service provider (TSP) subscriber data of cell phone and Internet users without warrants. As well, the legislation would force Telecoms to create back-door spy channels into their networks to aid security agencies in keeping tabs on online criminals (and potentially ordinary citizens).

In the next few weeks, the fight for the open and affordable Internet will see a lot of activity. The next round of negotiations for the TPP's Internet trap will take place, the CRTC will hold a hearing to determine whether Big Telecom giant Bell should be allowed to acquire yet another key media asset, and Parliament in Canada will resume, possibly making way for the warrantless online spying bill.
