Forget the TV titans

If you needed proof of the enduring power of television in Canada, look no further than the tens of thousands of comments submitted to the CRTC over the last month.

Canada's TV titans have been in full battle mode for our hearts and wallets since the government told the CRTC to ask "consumers" what they thought about proposed changes to the TV system. In one corner, the broadcasters are proposing that they get paid a negotiated amount from the cable and satellite companies for the carriage of their TV signals. In the opposite corner, the cable and satellite guys are proposing that the broadcasters go and get stuffed. From dueling full-page newspaper ads to cloying spots on TV and YouTube, with tweets and Facebook groups along the way, it's been hard to miss.

He dissolved further. Then a swift shift to cheery chat with a reporter about coffee.

Twittering in Tehran and how small is the new big

It used to be that if you wanted to start a newspaper, say, oh, the National Post, you'd need a pre-jailterm Conrad Black and his investors to pony up millions of dollars for presses, trucks, paper and salaries. With that investment would come the expectation of commensurate profits. That's the deal with the devil high capital ventures make. The only way they can start is to get an early and large cash injection which in turn becomes an albatross when things go pear-shaped.

American cable news and the "fascist socialist" apocalypse

The right-wing news pundits of American corporate media have been losing it over Obama's "socialist" policies, making references to the apocalypse and fascism as part of their agenda to demonize his administration's policies.
