Amy Goodman, host of Democracy Now! launched her new book Breaking The Sound Barrier at an event co-hosted by community radio stations CJSF, Co-op Radio and CiTR in Vancouver, B.C. last night. Despite being detained by Canadian border services delaying her book launch by over an hour Amy Goodman delivered an impassioned lecture to a standing room only audience.


Goodman's 90-minute lecture touched on topics including the U.S. health care debate, the recent death of her mother, her arrest at the Republican National Convention, the importance of independent media, the upcoming summit in Copenhagen and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

CKLN moves to the Regent Park Media Arts Centre

Toronto's oldest campus-community radio station will be broadcasting as an Internet radio station by the end of the month in association with the Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre.   

CKLN was informed by the Ryerson Student Centre (Palin Foundation) that they have until August 27 to vacate its studios and leave the Ryerson campus, where it has broadcast for almost 30 years on 88.1 FM.

"Because we're no longer an FM station, we can't fulfill the space requirement at Ryerson," said station manager Jacky Tuinstra-Harrison.

Why we need public media

The aspen grove on Kebler Pass in Colorado is one of the largest organisms in the world. Thousands of aspen share the same, interconnected root system. Last weekend, I snowmobiled over the pass, 10,000 feet above sea level, between the towns of Paonia and Crested Butte. I was racing through Colorado to help community radio stations raise funds, squeezing in nine benefits in two days. The program director of public radio station KVNF in Paonia dropped us at the trailhead, where the program director of KBUT public radio in Crested Butte and a crew of station DJs picked us up on snowmobiles to whisk us 30 miles over the pass.
