War, oppression, poverty and climate change have defined the first decade of the 21st century. But so too has resistance. As the global economic system moves from crisis to crisis, ordinary people all over the world are looking for alternatives, and ways to fight back.

The stakes couldn't be higher. We're not just fighting to save jobs and pensions, or to bring the troops home now. Faced with the growing threat of climate change, we're fighting for the future and survival of the planet.

Marxism 2010 is a three-day conference of over 40 talks and panel discussions, where hundreds will discuss and debate how to build a better world.

Join us: we have a planet to save, and a world to win.

Working class warrior

When she was nine years old, Claudette Boulanger told a lie that may have saved her life. In July of that year she had arrived from Jamaica to live with an aunt in Toronto. By October that same year she had begun running away to escape from her aunt's sexually abusive husband. One winter evening, while on the run, she phoned a friend and told her that she needed to spend the night at her house because otherwise she might freeze to death on the street. She laughs a deep, mirthful laugh as she explains that because she had never before experienced winter in Canada she had no idea that people could actually freeze to death in the winter.

The rise and fall of the U.S. auto industry

Ford, GM and Chrysler, America's "Big 3" automakers, are in serious trouble and demanding help from the government. Is the global economic crisis to blame, or are these companies simply not adapting to the markets, making big expensive gas guzzlers that no one wants? Al Jazeera's Washington correspondent takes a brief look at the history of big cars and the American dream, and also explores possible global repercussions if the Big 3 go bankrupt.

To get an idea of American public opinion on the bailout, check out the Gallup poll video too.
