“The Yes Men are among the most visible and effective activist-artists of our time, reaching countless people through websites, newspapers, and television broadcasts. Over the past decade they have fearlessly taken on the world’s biggest corporations and bureaucracies. Infiltrating the elite realm of the influential and the moneyed, cloaked in the sheerest layer of authority–thrift-store suits, quick-print business cards, forged press releases–these social activators urge us to question where ethics belong in our capitalist-driven society.”- curator, Astria Suparik

Buy Nothing Day

In September 1992, the first Buy Nothing Day commenced in Vancouver, Canada. Founded on the premise of directing concern to the societal problem of over-consumption, Buy Nothing Day is understood as a worldwide day of protest against consumerism.

Contemporarily, Buy Nothing Day is celebrated November 26 and 27.

Culture jamming

Numerous consumer social movements have utilized the practice of culture jamming to undermine mainstream cultural institutions -- including that of corporate advertising.

The imitation of advertisements and modification of logos are popular tactics used by jammers to disrupt the intended message of marketers. In light of this, culture jamming is sometimes mistaken for vandalism.

The term ‘culture jamming’ was first coined in 1984 by San Francisco-based collage band Negativland.
