The New York based Shen Yun Performing Arts once again brings an entirely new lineup of its world-class classical Chinese dance, numerous ethnic and folk dance styles, songs, and musical scores to Vancouver, in Feb. 2012.

In the two and half hour program, through a collection of short-piece performances, audiences travel from the Himalayas to tropical lake-filled regions; from the legends of the culture's creation over 5,000 years ago through to the story in modern China today; from the highest heavens down to the dusty plateaus of the Middle Kingdom.

Rage, the Winnipeg Jets and Depression Culture

I'd like to treat the national celebration of the return of the Winnipeg Jets -- along with the simultaneous debate over fighting and violence -- as a contemporary case of Depression Culture. Culture during the Great Depression has been widely studied. It included glitzy Hollywood musicals, gangster films, dance marathons, the explosion of radio as a mass medium and the proliferation of sports teams, leagues and superstars.

The Sleeping Beauty is a ballet that epitomizes, perhaps better than any other, the meaning of classical ballet. Never simply a retelling of the well-known fairy tale, the ballet is conceivably the greatest of the Tchaikovsky-Petipa collaborations.
