Freeing Ourselves: A Guide to Health and Self Love for Brown Bois

by The Brown Bois Project
(The Brown Bois Project,
2011;

Trans bodies should come with an owner's manual.

That thought was likely the inspiration for Freeing Ourselves: A Guide to Health and Self Love for Brown Bois, an introspective health-focused guidebook by The Brown Boi Project, a collective of contributors committed to compiling that manual capably and in an engaging way. The Brown Boi Project describe themselves as a community of masculine of center womyn, men, two-spirit people, transmen and allies "who are committed to transforming our privilege of masculinity, gender and race into tools for achieving Racial and Gender Justice."

It can be tough finding alternative research sources. When the rhetoric is so thick and the confirming documents are buried or blacked out, it's time to start some radical research. Considerations

  • Why do you need media coverage?
  • Who are your intended audience?
  • Which type of media are you targeting?
  • What are the key messages?
  • Is the contact person to field follow ups from media/journalists clearly identified?
  • Does this person have a set of talking points?
  • Have you considered the context in which this press release is being issued?

Cutting the crap

Rhetoric for Radicals: A Handbook for Twenty-First Century Activists

by Jason Del Gandio
(New Society Publishers,
2008;
$17.95)

If you have ever lived in a big city, then you have most likely experienced being bombarded with leaflets by a passionate activist while walking down the street. How many times have you dismissed these activists as extremists or radicals with slogans? There is no denying that our world is in need of change, however the passion of an activist may not easily translate to the masses, making it potentially impossible to affect change. In their rush to sway the world to their cause, a person's passion may eclipse the clarity and intelligence required in communicating the importance of a cause.
