Spanish on her tongue (en dos lenguas) is a one-womyn show about the immigrant displacement, loss of language and denied aboriginality of a queer girl. this coming of age story begins in 1983 chile during the military dictatorship and centers around the migration of a little girl and her family to the working class neighbourhood of chalkfarm – in north york. we follow her through her excitement of learning a new language, while also re-living the shame of losing the language she was taught to love in. as she struggles with her role of translator to her family, lacking words in spanish to authentically interpret situations too mature for her age, her english vocabulary expands, placing her in between two worlds she cannot fully embrace.

In celebration of International Worker’s Day, SIKLAB Ontario, in collaboration with UKPC@UofT and York, ignites their militancy in upholding the working class struggle through a panel discussion on Canada’s labour and immigration programs from the perspective of the Filipino Canadian community. Making up the largest community of temporary foreign workers, live-in caregivers and deskilled immigrants, majority of whom are women, the Filipino Canadian community is relegated to serve as Canada’s pool of cheap and disposable labour.

Security certificates: Is it the end?

The week of September 21 was an important one. Well, it is true that it is a special week when Muslims celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr and were happy congratulating and visiting each other. But for two other Muslim families, one in Ottawa and another in Montreal, this week had a special meaning.

I am speaking about Sophie Lamarche and her husband Mohamed Harkat who live in Ottawa, and about Adil Charkaoui and his family who live in Montreal. For Harkat and Charkaoui this week meant an extraordinary change in their lives.
