International Women's Day: Stop the 'Harpocracy' on women's progress

The Alternative Report issued in response to the federal government's report on women's progress in Canada 15 years after the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is a refreshing counterpoint to the Harper government's manipulation of the facts.

The Alternative Report will be submitted by women's groups at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York in March. The commission will discuss progress on women's rights made by world governments including Canada since 1995.

The Government of Canada should hang its head in shame. In 2006, Canada was ranked number 14 out of 150 countries (90 per cent of the world's population) by the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index. It now ranks number 31.

Musings on International Women's Day

A lot of us working/breathing/organizing in feminist/humanist/womanist communities were running from event to event last week during International Women's Day (IWD) week and for my first blog post here at BITCH, I thought I'd share some of the deconstructing thoughts I've been having aloud about what I witnessed and participated in.

There's been debate over whether it's the 99th or 100th year anniversary of IWD, and whatever the case, I find myself perplexed and widely critical once again of how the day and week gets celebrated.

Clara Zetkin and a small group of like-minded women marked this day a century ago; today we remind ourselves how much women have achieved, and how much work there is still left to be done.

Are Ottawa women able to grow their own fresh vegetables for their dinner table? Does it take robbing the piggybank just to get the laundry done? Are there any community programs out there not well known that can help make life easier for women or their children?
