Internet freedom getting stifled in the U.S.

One of President Barack Obama's signature campaign promises was to protect the freedom of the Internet. He said, in November 2007, "I will take a back seat to no one in my commitment to network neutrality, because once providers start to privilege some applications or websites over others, then the smaller voices get squeezed out and we all lose."

Jump ahead to December 2010, where Obama is clearly in the back seat, being driven by Internet giants like AT&T, Verizon and Comcast. With him is his appointed chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Julius Genachowski, his Harvard Law School classmate and basketball pal who just pushed through a rule on network neutrality that Internet activists consider disastrous.

Circumvent Online Censorship

Internet censorship can isolate activists and prevent them from accessing potentially valuable information or publishing their own content. As a result, many activists may find their abilty to communicate with allies limited by online censorship.

The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto published “Everyone’s Guide to By-Passing Internet Censorship” to offer practical advice to anyone dealing with content filtering. This guide outlines some of the online filters in place around the world and describes some simple techniques that activists can use to evade online censorship.

Pro: your blog will not be traced

Sometimes it's important to keep your identity hidden. For these dangerous times, there's Global Voice's guide to anonymous blogging. This 25 page guide has screen-shot step by step instructions for activists to make their blog much harder to trace. The guide uses Wordpress and Tor to create more secure sites and gives instructions for using public computers as well as personal systems. Every action has a blurb about why it's important for non-tech savvy activists.

Going viral

going viral can do wonders for an campaign

Getting the word out online takes more than a strong campaign. It means creating something entertaining, catchy, relatable and succinct. Going viral means that a video, a recording, a blog, a hashtag, a facebook group or an image has become so popular online that it enters the everyday conscientiousness of the masses. For example, videos of demonstrators holding flash mobs can go viral and be reported on by news outlets. Not only does a video like that show that a lot of people are active and interested in the issue, it's entertaining. This guide will cover:

Tumblr

Tumblr is a microblogging platform. If you think of different platforms on a timeline from the 140 character posts on twitter to the infinitely long blog entries on a provider like wordpress, Tumblr is somewhere in between.

Your blog may host longer posts, mostly made up of text and hyperlinks while your tumblr has quicker hits of content. Tumblrs are good for short form multimedia content. They're better at providing quotes, videos, pictures or links one at a time rather than commentary. Tumblrs are typically known for their short style, quick hits and ability to be reblogged and shared by other users on their Tumblrs.

Internet blackout protest sends message to U.S. legislators

Wednesday, Jan. 18, marked the largest online protest in the history of the Internet. Websites from large to small "went dark" in protest of proposed legislation before the U.S. House and Senate that could profoundly change the Internet. The two bills, SOPA in the House and PIPA in the Senate, ostensibly aim to stop the piracy of copyrighted material over the Internet on websites based outside the U.S. Critics, among them the founders of Google, Wikipedia, the Internet Archive, Tumblr and Twitter, counter that the laws will stifle innovation and investment, hallmarks of the free, open Internet.
