Narrow focus made CBC 'feminist' documentary inaccurate, unhelpful and defeatist

There are things to be grateful for about CBC's documentary The F-Word: Who Wants to Be a Feminist?, aired last Thursday, March 3.

For one thing, the filmmakers didn't interview Gwen Landolt or anyone else from the misnamed REAL Women of Canada, nor anyone who could be called a "conservative" feminist a la Sarah Palin.

Feminism FOR REAL: Deconstructing the Academic Industrial Complex of Feminism

by Jessica Yee, ed.
(The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives,
2011;
$15)

What is a feminist?

Is a feminist an academic who can quote bell hooks and Betty Friedan with ease? Is a feminist a great orator who steps up to podiums, demanding freedom for all women, using buzzwords such as marginalization, empowerment and exploitation? Is a feminist white, benefitting from class privilege and well-versed in feminist theory, as the representation in last week's highly criticized CBC documentary The F Word might suggest? Or is being a feminist simply antiquated, as columnist Margaret Wente declares "The war for women's rights is over. And we won."

VIDEO: Jessica Yee launches new book 'Feminism FOR REAL'

Jessica Yee and contributors from her new book, Feminism FOR REAL: Deconstructing the academic industrial complex of feminism, celebrated the book's launch in front of a packed house last week at the Toronto Women's Bookstore. There was standing room only, as spectators lined the walls and stairs, while others had to be turned away at the door.

"I always think five people are going to show up, because I think that I post things and I rant and I rave all the time and nobody is listening," said a very modest Jessica Yee. "I'm truly honoured that you are listening and people are here."
