Klezmer night with the Jewstice League
Location
...Tantzn, Tzingn, Essen, Trinkn...
We are the Jewstice League Klezmer ensemble. Our name signals the fact
that we are rooted in various social justice causes. In addition, we
are a folk group that aims to promote Eastern European/Yiddish culture
and klezmer. We are a 7-person ensemble: violin, flute, accordion,
mandolin, sax, trombonne and tuba. The names behind the instruments are Joey Berljawsky, Damon Hankoff, Dave Jonas, Elise Klein, Rachel Gotthilf, Jesse Gutman, and Liora Santopinto.
Come to the Klezmer music show - From the Old Country to Park Avenue. The evening will include Bronny Levy, a Yiddish Folksinger, a video-art installation by Victoria Nam, and a fun and rowdy Klezmer music evening with the Jewstice League.
Sotomayor: A lot of 'splainin' to do
It's a shame that Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the Obama nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, chose not to defend her statement "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life" at her nomination hearings this week.
Ten touchy minutes on Gaza
British playwright Caryl Churchill's 10-minute play on Gaza is in Toronto this weekend. It played in Montreal two weeks ago. The Quebec Jewish Congress called it "anti-Semitic and full of hatred." B'nai Brith says it is "clearly aimed at maligning Jews" and asked Toronto's mayor to cancel the show. If someone says "clearly" about a thing, it's usually a sign that it's wide open to interpretation. It's the equivalent of "frankly."
