Call out for support from the Quebec student strike

Hey all, I wanted to pass along this call out I received for support from the Quebec student strike. It seems things are ramping up for August.

Convergence to block the return to class in Quebec!

Montreal – August-13th to 17th

Since February, students across Quebec have been on strike against a 75% tuition hikes. These students have maintained picket lines, disrupted classes, blocked bridges, and continually taken the streets in fierce resistance to the neoliberal agenda of the Charest Liberal government.

Over and over again, I hear that the Occupy movement in Canada is having a hard time getting over the fact that a long-term encampment may just not be possible right now -- due to 2011's legal crackdown on Occupy encampments taking up public and private space -- and how to still utilize the spirit behind Occupy as we move into summer 2012.

Occupy is more than just holding physical space; its tactic and purpose is to facilitate the 99 per cent in shining a light on the actions of the one per cent.

The movement and tactic just needs to be reimagined in new and relevant ways.

Perhaps shorter-term occupations as a tool to bring attention to the actions of one per cent corporations?

Post-secondary education in Canada is in crisis. Students In Canada collectively owe the federal government more than $14.5 billion. Ontario's tuition fees are 23% higher than the national average. Decades of cuts by both the provincial and federal governments have resulted in tuition fees increasing at more than twice the rate of inflation.
