Meteorologist, TV/film producer, university lecturer, writer, broadcaster and general media expert, Richard Zurawski is coming to the store to lead a discussion about how the media is failing to keep us informed.
Why do so many people still deny the "hypothesis" of global climate change? All but a few rogue scientists agree that we have a crisis on our hands, but all we get from TV and news media are debates in the form of sound bites... Why are we denying the voices of those experts in favor of politicians and pundits?
So get up off the couch and let's have a discussion (with an expert) face to face!

Why we need public media

The aspen grove on Kebler Pass in Colorado is one of the largest organisms in the world. Thousands of aspen share the same, interconnected root system. Last weekend, I snowmobiled over the pass, 10,000 feet above sea level, between the towns of Paonia and Crested Butte. I was racing through Colorado to help community radio stations raise funds, squeezing in nine benefits in two days. The program director of public radio station KVNF in Paonia dropped us at the trailhead, where the program director of KBUT public radio in Crested Butte and a crew of station DJs picked us up on snowmobiles to whisk us 30 miles over the pass.

Why we must limit the influence of corporate media

Editor's Note: This is the second of five articles that address the need to develop independent media -- print, broadcast and Internet-based -- in Canada. All five articles will appear on rabble.ca. The first article explored the reasons why traditional media no longer provide reliable news and information to the Canadian public. It can be viewed here. This second article explores how for-profit, corporate-owned media have filtered and censored both print and broadcast news for decades. The third article, which will appear following the Holiday break on Jan.

MDD needs your help!

You are invited to a public meeting to shape the agenda for this year's Media Democracy Day.

We want to hear what you envision for MD Day.

Which speakers do you want to invite?
What themes are important to you?
What skillshares would you be interested in coming to or offering?
How should the day be organized?

Through facilitated decision-making, you will help generate ideas that will be the foundation for the next MDD.

Everyone is Welcome!

We'll start the session with a brief presentation about the current state of media in Canada and then move into facilitated discussion and visioning.
