NDP still winning in Nova Scotia

This week's byelection results are another signal of how deeply things have changed in Nova Scotia. Not only is the NDP still gaining, but this run -- totally opposite to our political customs -- would have been nearly unthinkable a short while ago. Let's repeat the election night question: What's going on?

The NDP wins yet another victory in virgin territory, Antigonish, and ends up competitive even in the former Tory premier's riding of Inverness. Reasons evoked include the notion that many voters simply wanted to get on the government bandwagon, and that the relentless work of motivated New Democrats, like Antigonish's third-time candidate Maurice Smith, finally bore fruit.

Progressives look east with envy as Nova Scotia goes NDP

There used to be a T-shirt that said, "I think, therefore I am ... NDP."  It's that "thinking" that long-time supporters of the NDP believe distinguishes them from members of the other political parties.

They tell the story -- perhaps apocryphal -- about a member of the Liberal party who went as an observer to an NDP convention.  When he saw all the delegates seated around tables that were covered with papers, pencils, pamphlets, he asked, wryly, "What are they doing?  Playing bingo?"  NDP members love that. They know that lowly Liberal delegates don't work at their convention.  They know they're there just to approve policy that's set by the bigwigs in the backrooms, behind closed doors.

E-Day in Nova Scotia: A breakdown of the parties' campaign promises

Since it was called on May 4, the Nova Scotia election has forced voters to question their political tastes.

The Conservatives began the trend with an odd promise to spend liberally, while the Liberals and New Democrats followed with conservative spending strategies. Meanwhile the NDP has strayed from their socialist and environmental-leaning roots to a more right-winged approach.

Shifting party lines might be one reason Nova Scotians could see an NDP government tonight; the latest polls show Darrell Dexter poised to win a majority.

Nova Scotia: Can the NDP break our centuries-long chain?

Before we enter the booth and wield the stubby pencil, let us consider the big picture. Let me tell it in terms of my political fancy, the one I’ve been nursing for decades: The NDP comes to power and mounts the third great reform movement in Nova Scotia’s snarled political history. And this one sticks. They manage to actually change our bad political culture.

Bear with me. The Liberals and Conservatives both had a historic run at it, but our patronage-ridden politics defeated them both.
