On Friday morning, outgoing Ontario Federation of Labour President Wayne Samuelson banged his gavel for the last time as he adjourned the convention.  

Not sure why, but I found this convention to be "flat" - i.e. a fairly low energy event with some notable exceptions. Below are a few of my convention highlights. 

Policy 

When it comes to central labour bodies like the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Canadian Labour Congress, I tend to be a bit of a cynic. We often hear lots of talk and see little action. I can also be cynical about my own organization at times although I'm also very proud of the good work that goes on every day and the dedication of so many of our local leaders, top leaders and staff. I'll admit that I have a bit of an attitude problem at times. 

I have the privilege again of representing the members of my union at the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) convention which begins tomorrow (with some meetings later today). I'll try to do some mini-blogging with highlights during the week. 

This is an election year and President Wayne Samuelson will not be running again. Word is that Sid Ryan has the nod from the OFL exec and will be the next leader. Sid is the first leader from a public sector union to take the helm of the Fed. Change is good and I think Sid will be a good spokesperson for the issues facing working people in Ontario.
