Pipeline Snakes and Ladders: Energy board changes pipeline hearing rules

I want to alert you to the most recent attack on environmental protection and democracy in this country and share with you a letter I wrote to Gaetain Caron, Chair and CEO, National Energy Board of Canada (NEB). I was spurred to write after a frustrating experience last week.

The NEB is now operating under NEW rules created by last June's omnibus bill and, as predicted, democratic participation has suffered -- in this case regarding the environmental review process concerning Enbridge's proposal to reverse its old "Line 9" pipeline (that has been transporting light oil from Montreal to Sarnia for decades). Enbridge wants to use Line 9 in reverse to pump corrosive Tar Sands bitumen from Sarnia to Montreal and beyond eastward (exactly where we don't know).

Bill C-57: New and improved oil spills!

Harper's public relations and spin team hit Vancouver last week to unveil their super-duper enviro-protection plan for pipelines and tankers. Minister of Natural Resources Joe Oliver and Minister of Transport Denis Lebel described their new regime for oil spill safety against the backdrop of the Port of Vancouver. On CTV Power Play, Oliver went so far as to say the Exxon Valdez spill could never happen in Canada. What should no longer surprise me is how little was unveiled.

Government must heed environment commissioner's warnings

When the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform exploded in 2010, killing 11 people and spewing massive amounts of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, it cost more than $40 billion to mop up the mess. In Canada, an oil company would only be liable for only $30 million, leaving taxpayers on the hook for the rest.

oil spill.

Another day, another pipeline spill

A recent pipeline leak sent 475,000 litres of oil into Alberta’s Red Deer River. It could have been worse; nothing was being pumped at the time. The company, Plains Midstream, claims the light sour crude may smell bad but poses no risk to humans!

Dangers of the Northern Gateway Pipeline

 

    We live in a world of what ifs. However, some what ifs demand serious attention. 

     What if the proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline is built? What if it leaks or spills oil, which has happened to Enbridge pipelines. Let’s assume that the proposal jumps through the hoops and Enbridge builds the twin pipelines to bring tar-sands oil to the harbour at Kitimat, British Columbia. 

     What then?

Corridor Resources submit sub-par oil spill scenario for Gulf of St. Lawrence

The St. Lawrence Coalition issued a press release Monday denouncing numerous errors in the oil spill simulation submitted by Corridor Resources for its exploration permit in Old Harry.

Old Harry is an ecologically sensitive area of the Gulf of St. Lawrence that Corridor Resources has a permit to explore for offshore drilling. For more background, see this recent blog.

Lessons not learned on anniversary of BP oil spill

Last week was the second-year anniversary of the devastating BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The release of at least 4.9 million barrels of oil, which BP then used at least 1.9 million gallons of toxic Corexit dispersants to sink, has been described as the largest human-caused environmental disaster in the U.S.
