New Year, new online tools

January is always a good month to start something new: a soon-to-be-ignored gym membership, a holistic-detox-cleansing diet you'll realize is nonsense by Day Three, or, trying new productivity software, sites and services to save you time and headaches.

Here are my suggestions for a few worth adopting and sticking with all year long:

rabble news

We're celebrating our ninth birthday!

We're nine! We're feeling full of life and flush with our successes and we invite you to help us plan for our second decade as Canada's independent, progressive online news source.

rabble.ca celebrates it ninth birthday this Sunday -- April 18th -- and we will rejoice our successes and plan for the next nine years. But before we do, we want you to know more about our team.

First credit and thanks goes to publisher Kim Elliott and the rabble staff for their effort and devotion. rabble.ca is run by a mash-up of about a dozen part-time staff and interns and many, many volunteer hours put in by a broad range of people from across the country.

TransferBigFiles

how to send big files easily

TransferBigFiles is free file transfer and hosting tool. The service enables users to send and share files that are generally too large for email. The tool works by allowing users to upload files to its servers; TransferBigFiles then sends the intended recipient a link where the file can be accessed.

Political action and real vs. virtual worlds

Discarnate is my fave among the many terms slung by Marshall McLuhan, who'd have turned 100 yesterday. It means, Philip Marchand wrote here, "almost literally bodiless." It originated long ago in occult circles: seances, messages from the dead. McLuhan himself passed on when the Internet was very young, but he sensed what was coming: virtual lives, lived mainly online. Today discarnate pretty much equals virtual.
