Tumblr

the tumblr logo

Tumblr is a microblogging platform. If you think of different platforms on a timeline from the 140 character posts on twitter to the infinitely long blog entries on a provider like wordpress, Tumblr is somewhere in between.

Your blog may host longer posts, mostly made up of text and hyperlinks while your tumblr has quicker hits of content. Tumblrs are good for short form multimedia content. They're better at providing quotes, videos, pictures or links one at a time rather than commentary. Tumblrs are typically known for their short style, quick hits and ability to be reblogged and shared by other users on their Tumblrs.

Google+

The Google+ Project is Google’s latest social media initiative.

Google+ aims to mitigate the differences that currently exist between online versus real-world communication. In order to create more fluidity between online and offline communication, Google+ allows users to participate in online "Hangouts" and "Huddles" with friends, and organize their contacts into "Circles".

Essentially, Google+ strives to make online social networking as similar to real-life socialization as possible.

Digital activism

Digital activism refers to online participation in cause-related movements. In such campaigns, digital activists leverage networked technologies -- YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, SMS text messaging -- for social and political change campaigns.

As grassroots organizers take advantage of their digital tool belts, it is revolutionizing how activists rally. Via digital means, socially aware people can connect, and create change in a space that is free and global -- the World Wide Web. In addition, individuals can organize large scale events, to create awareness and engage others for their cause, at virtually no cost.

Distributed Library

A distributed library is a member-based library system that lacks a central storage or ownership model. Individuals share a wide variety of media resources (books, articles, maps, video, audio, zines) directly with each other. The library catalog exists in a database form that is usually made available to users via the Internet.
