Finance minister's office occupied by Ontario Federation of Labour president over private pensions scheme

WHITBY, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 17, 2010) -- Ontario Federation of Labour President Sid Ryan, unions and community members have just occupied Jim Flaherty's office, 701 Rossland Road East, Unit 204, Whitby, stunned by his last-minute betrayal of Canadians' retirement security.

On the eve of the Kananaskis provincial finance ministers' meeting, Flaherty has dumped the expansion of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and put all Canadians at the mercy of the banks, mutual fund and insurance industries.

On Saturday, approximately 10,000 people rallied in Dundas Square and then marched to Toronto City Hall to help defend good jobs, public services and greener cities throughout Ontario. Together, they challenged the conservative agenda that they say is threatening their jobs, their livelihoods and their neighbourhoods.

Thousands of union activists will be going to Hamilton on January 29 to show support for 900 steelworkers locked out by U.S. Steel since early November. The Toronto & York Region Labour Council is helping to co-ordinate the turnout, along with the Ontario Federation of Labour and Canadian Labour Congress.

This struggle has a number of key dimensions that relate to all Canadians like, de-indexing pensions, two-tier benefits, New Canadian Benefit and exposing the culprits of callous company tactics.

OFL Drive to Work caravan returns to Queen’s Park

“Don’t look at me like I ordered this weather.”

That’s one of the rally organizers under the arches of the legislative building at Queen’s Park where dozens of people, including injured workers, union members and politicians, have taken refuge from the raging thunderstorm that struck Toronto around noon Thursday. The timing of the storm couldn’t be worse. In less than thirty minutes, the Ontario Federation of Labour’s (OFL) Drive to Work caravan, a 3,000-km province-wide tour  to draw attention to the recession’s effects on Ontario people, is due to arrive at Queen’s Park, followed by a meeting with representatives of the Ontario government.
