The Bay drops Ahava: A victory for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement in Canada

This month, the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) have discontinued sales of Ahava cosmetic products. Ahava is an Israeli company that has been a target of the Palestinian campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel.

HBC was the main retailer in Canada that carries Ahava's line, and has been targeted by a number of Palestine solidarity group over the past 18 months. Many participated in the campaign across the country, including Tadamon in Montreal, the Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid in Toronto, with Canadians for Peace and Justice in the Middle East being the latest group to join in.

A preview of the Toronto Jewish Film Festival

Sayed Kashua, the Arab-Israeli scriptwriter and creator of the remarkable comedy series 'Arab Labor.'

Israel may have problematic politics but it is also a hothouse for remarkable storytellers and journalism as demonstrated by some upcoming offerings at the upcoming Toronto Jewish Film Festival, on from April 17 to 25.

The latest available episode of the Israel TV sitcom, "Arab Labour" is only on at 12 p.m. on April 23 at the Al Green Theatre in Toronto, but you may be able to rent it eventually in some video and DVD outlets along with past episodes. Sayed Kashua, the scriptwriter and creator of this remarkable series may be among the funniest men in the Jewish state. I wish someone could do something as biting in Canada.

Cda Pension Plan & Israeli Apartheid: CPP has $1.5B in firms supplying Military, Police, Surveillance, Prison products to Israel

Israel and the Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
Should the CPP invest in companies that profit from Israel's military occupation, its attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, its destruction of Palestinian homes and orchards, or its construction of the illegal Separation Wall?

Harper's reckless foreign policy in the Middle East

It is hard to credit the latest statements and actions by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird. On both Iran and Israel, Baird seems to almost deliberately seek to humiliate both himself and the country he is supposed to represent on the international stage. Taking an ultra-orthodox rabbi (whose organization opposes any Palestinian state) with him on an official visit to Israel is not just bizarre but dangerous. And suggesting, essentially, that Iran has a first-strike policy against Israel (with non-existent nuclear weapons) while comparing its leader to Hitler, puts Baird firmly in the company of drunks in a barroom exchange of tough talk.

An interview with Norman Finkelstein: Israel 'has lost a lot of ground'

Controversial Jewish American scholar Norman Finkelstein does not feel like a pariah anymore.

Visiting Canada again this week on a tour of campuses to deliver lectures and answer questions about the seemingly intractable situation in the Middle East, he reports receiving more invitations to speak than ever these days.

"It is much more difficult in public life to defend Israel than to criticize it," Finkelstein explains in a telephone interview with rabble.ca. "I've gotten more invitations from more mainstream places."

We are holding this event to celebrate the Palestinian culture and remind the world that the Palestinians will never forget their home and origin, and will continue to peacefully resist the Israeli occupation for however long it takes to find justice, peace and equality.

We are also holding this event to allow Palestinians who were born and raised in Canada to experience the Palestinian culture that they never got to enjoy due to their inability to return to their Israeli-occupied land.
