A year in the life of Beit Zatoun

Opening night at Beit Zatoun in Toronto on Jan. 2010.

Beit Zatoun, the Toronto art space and cultural centre dedicated to Palestine, is a year old.

It opened its doors on January 30, 2010 for its first event, "Seven Days from a Gaza Diary," a performance for three female voices based on the diary kept by a young Palestinian woman during the invasion of Gaza, 12 months earlier in 2009. That night it was to be followed by piano improvisation by Toronto pianist, John Kameel Farah. And we -- the organizers -- held our breath, looking out our window mesmerized by the lights adorning our famous neighbour, Honest Ed's bargain store, wondering -- would anyone come to our evening? Could Beit Zatoun work?

What George Galloway's successful tour of Canada proved

It lasted over 18 months, but Jason Kenney's attempt to ban George Galloway ended in complete and utter failure. On November 27, the former British MP, who was declared inadmissible to Canada in March 2009, joined hundreds of supporters on Parliament Hill in Ottawa where he completed an 11-city, 12-day pan-Canadian speaking tour. In just under two weeks, Galloway sprinted across the country at break-neck speed, addressing in person nearly 8,000 people at sold-out meetings, reaching hundreds of thousands more through wall-to-wall media coverage.

"As any bookseller will tell you, the book you try to ban always ends up on the best-seller list," Galloway quipped in Ottawa. "Thanks to Jason Kenney, I have drawn thousands to my speaking events all across Canada."

Just like Hana Shalabi and Khader Adnan, 320 prisoners are held--without charge or trial--under administrative detention.

Join us at Beit Zatoun at 7PM on April 17th to learn more about the current situation in Israel for Palestinian prisoners and to help build the next stage of this struggle.

Middle East Peace. You've probably heard about it your whole life. Negotiations and wars, wars and negotiations. It seems endless and complicated, so what should you give a care?

Israeli-Canadian journalist Lia Tarachansky of the independent video news network, The Real News, will be touring Canadian campuses speaking about Canada's involvement in the Middle East conflict.

Why has Canada evolved a special relationship with the Israeli government? What is the Canada-Israel public security agreement and how does Canada's foreign policy in Israel affect its international standing?
