The Greater Toronto Workers’ Assembly will be holding a mass rally and family-friendly party to increase the visibility of the GTWA’s campaign for free and accessible transit.

People shouldn't have to pay what amounts to a user fee, for the right to access transportation across the city. The Free and Accessible Transit campaign argues that transit should be paid for by general revenues, like libraries, Medicare and other key services.

Fare-free transit would open up a new era in Toronto's history, and force the city, province and federal government to engage in a massive new public investment process, creating jobs and a new and environmentally friendly city.

After the crisis -- what's left?

One year ago, the collapse of Wall Street investment bank Lehman Brothers announced a major crisis of financial capitalism. The subsequent rescue of American banking and finance cost U.S. authorities $12.8 trillion. For anybody who has questioned, and contested the logic of the dominant ideology, the serious problems hardly came as a surprise. The more pertinent question is: does the financial crisis offer new, and better prospects for the left?
