Checking privilege

check your privilege at the door!

It's pretty common - an activist collective gets together to meet about starting a campaign. Even though the group is relatively diverse, it seems to be that the people who are talking the most are those with considerable privilege. It's those folks (white, straight, male, rich, able bodied, etc.) that have to make sure that they aren't falling back in line with the status quo.

North American society is made for the privileged, with the justification that we live in a meritocracy. In reality, there are many different systems of power working to oppress certain groups, depending on what identities they hold.

Learning our own lessons: One teacher's privilege diary

It's September. As I board the subway, I am not going to the university to begin a new semester teaching; instead, I am headed to see my doctor. Due to health issues, I have to take a semester off, and focus on learning to get well. At loose ends as school began without me, I decided to do something I had never done: engage in one of my own assignments -- the privilege diary. Just as I believe that students need to be listened to because they have lots to teach us, teachers also need to spend more time learning and taking on the challenges and risks that we ask of our students. What follows is my attempt to practice what I teach.

Sotomayor: A lot of 'splainin' to do

It's a shame that Judge Sonia Sotomayor, the Obama nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, chose not to defend her statement "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life" at her nomination hearings this week.
