Vindication for G20 protesters

In the aftermath of the G20 fiasco here last summer, one thing Torontonians agreed on was that such summits should be held in isolated venues -- on military bases, on ocean-going vessels, on melting glaciers -- anywhere but where lots of people reside.

But beyond being upset with the expense and disorder that weekend, many Torontonians (and city council) sided with the police, assuming that the arrest of 1,105 people must have somehow been justified, given the rampage of a small group through the downtown core.

Balloon Banners

students use a balloon banner to fight for a free Tibet

The Rukus society has produced this graphical guide to making balloon banners that will take your message to the higher ups. The guide is intended to help activists coordinate a screen or fabric banner suspended by two weather balloons. For different sized banners, the same principles apply but the preparation, cost, timeline and amount of gear should be adjusted.

The Occupy movement and questions about place

The Occupy movements have largely become dramas revolving around the excellent question posed by The Clash: Should I stay or should I go? It's become a story about a place. Some, like London (Ontario) are gone. Others, like London (England) are on notice. Occupy Wall St. is gone but it's back, in a different form. We'll know about Occupy Toronto, apparently, tomorrow. But it's possible that this is the wrong question. Let me offer another view based on a recent visit to Madrid.

The Coulter saga: The best response is to respond

Ann Coulter cancelled her own speech in Ottawa this week. No one did it to her. Police said there were so many protesters that they couldn't guarantee her security, but that's not the protesters' fault. Their job is to protest. They have the same right to expression that she does. A university official had sent a supercilious letter, warning her to talk nice, like a Canadian (in his view) does, but even he has a right to speak. Still, once administrators begin effectively recruiting protesters, they should make sure security is in place. They're the only ones I can see to blame.
