Stopping the introduction of coastal tanker traffic and tar sands expansion

As Christmas nears I am preparing a final update of some updates around Enbridge's proposed Northern Gateway pipeline this month. The first bit of news involves Liberal MP Joyce Murray, who has brought forward a Private Member's Bill to ban tankers off British Columbia's North Coast.

On December 14, Liberal MP from Vancouver Quadra, Joyce Murray introduced a bill in Parliament to formalize in law the a ban on crude oil tanker traffic in coastal waters. Bill C-606 entrenches former Prime Minister’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s 1972 moratorium on oil tankers in the hazardous waters of the North Coast.

Bill to ban tanker traffic on B.C. coast

Motion to urge government to legislate ban on tanker traffic passes in Parliament

On Dec. 7, 2010, the House of Commons passed a motion calling for a ban on crude oil tankers off British Columbia's North Coast. Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen put the motion forward, which passed 143-138. While the Conservative minority government opposed the motion, the NDP, Liberals and Bloc Quebecois supported it.

A ban on crude oil tankers, if passed into legislation, would present an almost insurmountable barrier to the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline currently under review. The proposed 1,170 km twin pipeline would connect the Alberta tar sands to a marine terminal in Kitimat, British Columbia, introducing an estimated 225 oil tankers per year to the waters of the North Coast.
