Pitoui.

Ooops.  Sorry.  Someone moved the spittoon.

50 Ale was once Canada's most popular beer, back at the start of the baby boom.  Up until then, beers were of the sippin'  kind, deffinately "heavier" and not meant for chugging.  By accident or design, Labatt's 50 was the first "lighter"  tasting beer and it was a hit with the kids who looked to Jimmy Dean as a hero.

Time marched on to tail end boomers like me, and with the advent of more "light" beers and increased marketing, 50 fell from favour. No one could say anything good about it.

But, I will say I have had Labatt's 50 Ale in that time period at the "Amber Lounge"  here in London at the Labatt Brewery.  Much different from what one could have from the stubby bottle.  It was great, one of the better beers I ever experienced.  Fresh on draft makes a huge difference for any beer.

At Fryfogles tavern in those days, we used to order Old Vienna because it was the only cold beer in the place when it was busy, as it frequently was.  None of us ever got past the second one (we used to order two at a time, Fry's had notoriously slow service)  and, like every other group of guys who ever tried "O.V." we laid claim to being the ones who first dubbed it "Old Vagina".
