There are still lots of close races so those numbers could move around. Results seem to be slow in some seats.

Assuming that the Libs and Tories end up with 10 apiece, how do they decide who forms the 'official' opposition? Do the Tories get is as the last government? Do they use popular vote as a tiebreaker? Or do they not have an 'official' opposition and just two opposition parties?

Yikes - Liberals have slipped into the lead in Dartmouth East - did anyone see that coming?

NDP is still in the hunt in Glace Bay (trailing by 175), CB North (trailing by 220), Preston (trailing by 164), Dartmouth East (trailing by 64 with 6 polls to report).

Whelan looks like she's squeaked out a win in Halifax-Clayton Park. The NDP trails by roughly 900 votes in Bedford-Birch Cove with 34/53 polls remaining but unless they're all superstrong NDP polls left to report, it's doubtful they'll close the gap.

NDP still has narrow leads in Pictou Centre (110 votes), Halifax-Citadel-Sable Island (231 votes), Kings North (460 votes), Kings South (260 votes), Lunenberg West (400 votes).

If the Tories and Libs both have the same no, because they were in govt before the writ was dropped, the Tories will be official oppositon, It is more complex than that but that is the Coles Notes version. I should also note that in 1998, both the Libs and the NDP finished the election eacjh with 19 seats. However, the Liberals HAD been the govt so the L Gov asked them to form a govt. Same principle.

Hopefully the Liberals will be able to hold it - the NDP has already won more than enough seats to win a majority but if we want the PC's to finish 3rd so the Libs can be the official opposition, the Libs need to hold in the standings.

Hmmm. CBC shows the LIbs elected and leading in only 2 of 6 Annapolis ridings.

I'd rather have the Libs knock off the Tories in Hants West and have the NDP take Dartmouth East and Glace Bay, which would leave NDP 33, Lib 10 and PC 9.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/nsvotes2009/livevideo/ live video or CBC Newsworld or CTV NewsNet if you are a TV person - I am at NDP HQ here in CB Nova  where we won time, much happiness, lots of tears of joy ' The man in Dart East, Liberal, where the heck did HE come from? And GOOD for Lenore Zann, esp after all that horrid publicity she got at the beginnibg! I am happy for her!

Moot point - Libs have won Dartmouth East - only one poll left to report and they're up by 140. How embarassing is that for Joan Massey - to lose her seat in the midst of an NDP landslide!

This is so exciting - clean sweep - and really close races where they weren't expecting them, one week ago.

As the analysts just said on CBC, it looks like this Liberal called Andrew Younger is the one who is changing the election outcome tonight for official opposition.  It is his impending win in Dartmouth East which may give the Libs the win over the Cons.

I know, poor Joanie!!! One can hope that poll is in an NDP area BUT... not likely! Oh the whoops and cheers in Nova, lots of q's as to where Paul M is, lol

Gosh, MacNeill almost looks or sounds like he is going to cry but he is getting better at speaking now....

Well I would say the results are the best possible outcome that could have happened though - the NDP got the majority, the Libs look like they will come 2nd, and the PC's look like they will finish last. Smile

The NDP has now been declared elected in 29 seats, so the majority is safe. The only NDP seat still on the knife edge is Pictou Centre - 105 vote lead with 2 polls to report. The other NDP 'leading' seats is Halifax-Citadel-Sable Island, where the results seem to be coming in very slowly but Preyra nonetheless has a 600 vote lead. Should hold up I would think.

MacNeil speaking now in Bridgetown.

I would have thought that it would be better for the NDP to have the PCs be the official opposition (to the extent that it matters) since the Tories will be leaderless and in disarray for a while and the best official opposition to the NDP is a WEAK one.

On the other hand, if the Tories are third there will be less pressure on MacDonald to keep his seat and hopefully he will leave politics and the NDP can pick up Inverness in a byelection!
