Cape Breton seems to be the one area of the province that withstood the NDP tide, although there were very near misses in Cape Breton North and Glace Bay, and Cape Breton South looks like it was fairly competitive (a 500-vote spread with about 10 polls to report).

JaneyCanuck, I know Clair Rankin - we worked together many, many years ago for Katimavik. We were group leaders together in Cape Breton with me in Sydney and he in Marion Bridge. Wow seeing his name was a "blast from the past."
I just love that Dexter got out and spoke to make sure he didn't interfere with the start of Crosby's game in Pittsburgh. If I didn't know I was in Canada, that would have done it.
It is al so exciting, I am logging off to concentrate on celebrating. Take care - janm it is great to see names of old friends isn't it? And yes, Darrell made it one min before the game starts but you have to recall that he reps Cole Harbour, home town of one Sidney Crosby who gave Darrell one of his jersey's - which if you pardon the pun, Darrell was sporting yesterday morning, lol Bye for now!!!

I'm not surprised to the see some resistance to an NDP government in the more Upper Middle Class suburban parts of Halifax. I think thats reflected in the loss in Dartmouth East and the disappointing NDP results in Halifax Clayton Park and Bedford.
OTOH there are absolutely huge swings to the NDP in some rural areas with economic difficulties.

I was aware of the significane of Sid the Kid from Cole Harbour. I just love that Dexter did that. If I didn't like the guy already - I would just from that!!!! Now there's someone of the people!
I noticed from a recent story that the NS NDP won some new rural seats.
Any info as to what turned the tide there?
Dexter on CBC just said there are no wild lefties in his new caucus.
Just listening to Dexter. It is pretty clear that Dexter gets it and that the NDP made rural Nova Scotia a priority

They are saying that if Andrew Younger wins in Dartmouth East, he will be a new rising star as the only person tonight to beat an NDP incumbent and give the Liberals the official opposition over the PC's.

If it isn't talked up here, take that question to the thread that was opened about whether the NSNDP has something to say for fed. But it can be expanded beyond that.
I live in the first rural seat we won big in 1998, and the only one we held after the backslide of 1999.
I just thought of this, but I think that, counterintuitively, it might be easier for the NDP to win where seats are smaller and some are more strongly rural and small town. Which federal seats, and Ontario provincial seats, only are in the north.
Excellent news from Nova Scotia- maybe there would be a place for a BC NDPer fed up with Gordon Campbell.

Congrats folks. No "moral victories" tonight.
From the Annapolis Valley - Jim Morton, given no support from the head office, has beaten Mark Parent! Minister, 'nice guy'. Ramona Jennex, given a fair amount of support from the head office, has beaten David Morse, Minister. Hants West, came third, a surprise that the Liberal didn't take it - Porter kept it - quite amazing.
I was a poll clerk, and saw a LOT of young people. A number of people who didn't seem familiar with voting procedures but were of the age to have voted many times - one (much) older woman, English as a second language, just walked in and handed her ballot to the DRO and said "I want to vote NDP".
So, maybe we've engaged those who felt disenfranchised before. Spoke to Jim and he said he wants to be kept accountable by those of us activists, grass roots people so he doesn't lose awareness of what the needs are. So, let's take him/them at their word, and not let just being 'better than Rodney' be good enough. We need to hold them to our policies, progressive, aware of vulnerable people who desperately need our support.
Who is going to be Ministers? THAT"s the big question.....
Way to go! I think I know how NSers must feel - I felt this way 40 years ago this very month (if memory serves). But you won't catch me bragging about how far ahead the West is...

Jack Layton hears you, and now maybe the rest of the NDP naysayers here, and elsewhere, will get it, and get off their stupid negativity. The NDP must be the only party that's eats their own during an election campaign.
If people want a moral compass they can go to church. The NDP is a political party and their goal is to win.
Once again kudos to you JaneyCanuk, and everyone else who contributed to this magnificant win.
You made history tonite, and don't you ever forget it.

Some interesting points:
Not a single seat changed hands on Cape Breton Island. What's more, the results there are extremely disproportionate - the NDP won 2 seats with 40.2% of the vote, the Liberals won 3 with 29.6%, and the Tories won 4 with 28.3% - in other words, the Tories won the fewest votes but got the most seats! (Anybody think the Tories will do nearly as well next time with a non-Cape Breton leader?)
In Halifax-Atlantic, John Buchanan's former seat, the Tories got a miserable 11% of the vote. The two Tory incumbents in HRM both ran third in their ridings.
The two Tory backbenchers - Porter (Hants West) and Bain (Victoria-The Lakes) and the Speaker - MacLeod (Cape Breton West) all survived, but the Cabinet got slaughtered - 9 of the 16 ministers running for re-election were defeated. The two seats held by ministers not re-offering were both lost to the NDP (Truro-Bible Hill and Colchester-Musquodobit Valley).
Halifax-Clayton Park was not very close at all in the end - Whelan won by 1,100 votes.
Maritimarr must be blushing (Liberal) red after the NDP sweep of the South Shore - the supposedly 'endangered' Vicki Conrad won 60% of the vote in Queens and the only seat that was even close was Lunenberg West. Ditto Jaihu and the other Liberal/Tory sock puppets.
The NDP appears to have done very well in the provincial seats that make up Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodobit Valley - any chance this will translate into the federal byelection? One would think Harper is going to wait as long as possible now that a Tory coronation looks less likely.
There won't be a recount unless there were so many spoiled ballots that they might change the outcome when re-examined.
This is not the first time that Dartmouth East has bucked provincial trends.
In 1984, Liberal Jim Smith won Dartmouth East from a P.C. when the rest of the Province was voting Conservative.
Joan Massey would make an interesting federal candidate in Dartmouth.
Just imagine what Peter MacKay (4 Provincial seats NDP, 1 P.C.) and Gerald Keddy (5 Provincial seats NDP) are thinking tonight!
Plus, in Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, 3 of 5 seats went NDP!
Maybe we won't be seeing a federal by-election there as soon as some of us were thinking!
