You got that right, Polly.  In exchange, I'm going to forgo my spousal rights to half our house until Husband dies (of natural causes!)

They are going to crucify me.

War Is Over.

If YOU Want It To Be Over.

Where's Chapman?  Where's Manson?  Why is that squirrel looking at me funn(ily)?

Because really, what the hell good is half a house?

I'm trying to quit smoking & it's not going too well.  I asked for a Medical Marijuana ticket and was turned down on the basis that it causes paranoia.

Causes paranoia?

Hi  G.Muffin.  I thought I saw a post by you about Vitamin D, yes?

I wanted to tell you that when I was ill and could not sleep Vitamin D made an enormous difference, it returned sleep to me.  I take 5000 iu a day. It took some time for my sleep to come back and I am sure it is different for everyone depending on how low our Vitamin D levels are.  I hope it works for you.

Yes, 5000 IU a day!  Have you had your Vitamin levels checked?  My vitamin B levels were also very low and that was also causing me problems, I had Vitamin B shots for a while and they made a difference too, I also take Vitamin B.

I will add that I am not a doctor, this is not medical advice, what I suggest you do is get a vitamin level check and ask for a copy of it and then do your own research.  Also, the doctor I saw who prescribed the Vitamin D and B was a conventionally trained doctor in addition to being an alternative practitioner so I would suggest finding a doctor who looks to nutrition as an important component in healing.

Two things

thing #1:  One of the big reasons I stopped smoking maruijana many years ago was that it was causing paranoia, fairly severe, and even after fairly small amounts.  It just wasn't enjoyable any more.  After being a regular enjoyer of pot since my mid teensI regretted that, but no sense in doing something that was making me feel unpleasant instead of good.

thing #2:  I take 2000 mg of Vit D, and have heard of people taking more.  Discuss it with your pharmacist, but I thik it's one of those things where you can use a fair bit, then just harmlessly pee away the excess.  I also take vit B shots.  I've heard you have to be more careful with the B's, and you can take more than is good for you.

ETA: whoops!  Thanks for that catch p-sto.  That's how fatal mistakes happen in hospitals

Thing 2 seems inconsistent.  It looks like one should be D and the other B but I could be wrong.

So, Fidel, we have something in common:  We're both afraid of dying someday.

Not afraid! NOT AFRAID! My old cat is having convulsions two or three times a day, and I don't want to let him go. He's still eating, and he's sleeping a lot. The vet says he's too old to even give anaesthetic to for so much as a teeth cleaning. Am I being cruel by not having him put to sleep right now? The weekend's almost here, and it will likely be harded to get a vet Sat-Sunday.

I'm NOT afraid of death. It's like going through a door to a place we can't return from someone said. Not afraid. Just a little reluctant maybe.

Och, Fidel, my heart goes out to you. No, I don't think you're being cruel. My guiding rule has always been that if the old guys are still eating and appear to be happy, then you let them go on as long as they can. At the other extreme, with some illnesses, like kidney failure, the active distress becomes so obvious that I feel I have to do something to end it.

But those are the two extremes. A year and a half ago, I was caught on a Sunday with a happy old diabetic cat who was suddenly failing (conscious but unable to get up, uninterested in food), and who then spent the night in convulsions, dying about 6 a.m. on the bed beside me. I didn't know whether I was doing the right thing in not packing him up to get to the emergency vet's, but I resisted going. I don't believe he was conscious through the convulsions, but who knows? I would have taken him in that morning, but he took himself away first.

When I think back on it, I think that was the right thing for him. I'm not sorry I kept him with me, even though I've finally helped all my other old guys to end sustained distress. You'll know. And there are emergency vets (very expensive, unfortunately). Make sure you know where the closest one is.

Thanks Skdadl. My guy has gone through half a bag of jumbo shrimp in just a few days. I'm stewing up some beef and kidney for him. He really likes that. He was hiding himself away under the lazy boy. But he's here beside me now catching some sun. I think I will give him a few more days and see how he goes on.

If they start to feel unwell, some cats will go to ground and others will become ultra-loving -- just depends on the cat.  The main reason to worry about a cat who's hiding is that you don't want really bad distress to set in without your knowing. I found my beloved old Cliffie hiding in a closet when he'd started foaming at the mouth, eg (last stage of kidney failure). That kind of thing calls for action imho. But if he's peaceful and especially if he can still eat, then that's life.

All my best to you and -- what's his name?

He's Smokey but registered as Thomas with the vet. He's all grey with just a bit of white on his belly. When I got him 16 or 17 years ago, he would chase a little rubber ball downstairs into the basement, and bring it back to me to throw again. He's a champion. He's always been a champion. Christ, now I can't see the screen.

Hugs, Fidel. You have a good weekend with Smokey.

And be very proud of yourself, too. It is not an easy thing to take an animal through a good life all those years.

Thanks Skdadl. He's just a little cat, too. He was sick once before and hid himself away. I had to take water to him down in the basement then. He didnt eat much for days then. He's tried so hard for me over the years. He's really a good cat. I've never seen a cat with so much character. If ever I went for a walk, I had to make sure he was in the house because he'd try to follow me. He followed me the first time for about three blocks and didn't realize he was behind me.

Fidel, if you want to talk in PMs through the weekend, or by email -- I'm skdadl@pogge.ca -- feel free.

You and Smokey may have longer than you think, so remember that. But you seem to be sensing something; I know that feeling. A year and a half ago, I talked my way through the tough day with Gomer online with a half-dozen people at BnR, and it really helped me (one of them is a vet). So anyway -- I'm always here for the animal peeps.

I hope Smokey makes it. (My dog made it through a dire situation a few years ago so I know it can happen.) But if he doesn't, he's lucky to have had you as his friend (and vice versa, of course).

Smokey's a bleu, blanc et rouger for sure. And I am very lucky to have enjoyed Smokey's company. Thanks everyone. He's grooming himself right now and looking pretty good considering.

Good luck with Smokey Fidel. I absolutely believe we have a duty of care to our pets but he sounds like he is totally loved by you and thats what matters (well that and a Habs win I guess but I'll bet he only cheers for them for the celebratory salmon/fish treats)

My little China girl outlived her sibs by many years in one case and 6 months in the other.  She was obese, diabetic and had a heart murmur and didn't go until she was 16 and fell down the stairs.  My husband scooped her up and she purred at him (she was a lovely girl) and the next morning they had to take the "death boat" to the mainland and had her mercifully destroyed.  My biggest regret:  I was hospitalized and didn't get to say goodbye.  But there was no time.  Good luck with your boy, Fidel.

Thanks Skdadl and G. Muffin. Both your comments have helped me decide that I should give him some time. I think he's better than what I thought. I thought he was hiding in the basement, because that's what he did a few years ago. He's not. He's under the chair in the living room at the worst of times. But he's been up and around all day and begging for food his usual self and stealing my chair when not looking.  My brother coming with his dog didn't help today, and I got a little short with him for bringing the little dog in the house as he harasses Smokey. Smokey batted him in the nose a couple of times. Didn't think he had the strength. But he didn't need the upset regardless. If things change for Smokey, i'm glad I have someone to contact and discuss it with. Thank you so much for understanding, Skdadl. My sister said last night to take him in today, and I'm glad I didn't. I'm going to take him in on Monday and see if there's anything they can give him to relieve pain or just to smooth things out for him some. I haven't seen him cramp up once today, so that's a good sign.
