Karzai threatens to join Taliban

Today's big news: Karzai threatens to join the Taliban. This comes right after he visited Kandahar and told people there that NATO's planned June offensive -- "the fulcrum of the entire war" according to the New York Times -- wasn't going to happen.

Earlier, I blogged about President Karzai's brother Wali, the strongman of Kandahar. A new article in the UK Independent details how the people despise him as a terrorist, warlord and drug trafficker.

Looking forward to the contortions of the pro-war crowd as they try to justify Canada's continued involvement in the occupation.

The CBC.ca story could have been headlined 'Karzai threatens to rejoin the Taliban', since he supported them as a tribal chief in Kandahar for a couple of years in the 1990s. Also, I know there are 'the Afghan people will win' threads, but I figured this big news might warrant its own thread.

So this means that Uncle Sam's proxies of the 1980s and today will be merging with their proxies in Kabul from the 90's?

It's been one long phony-baloney war on terror.

I heard that Harper was considering Karzai as their candidate in Edmonton Strathcona but the Taliban offered him a better deal. Helen Guergis has got an offer from them on the table.

Karzai is simply following the old "if ya can't beat 'em" adage.

Karzai is attempting to win greater support among Kandahar (province) village elders by adopting an antagonistic stance against the U.S.A. So far, the Pentagon, Defense Department, White House and State Department are tolerating it.

Imagine what would happen if he were to fall from Uncle Sam's favor.

Can you say the words "coup", "depose", "replace"?

Just saw Karzai on The National explaining that his relations with his allies in the West remain excellent. Hmmmmm.....Undecided

I think Afghans have a similar problem to what voters have in the US and Canada. The government and official opposition parties are interchangeable.

I suspect today Karzai's been brought off by the US - maybe not the first time, either.

Taleban Accuses Afghan President of 'Playing Games'

http://news.scotsman.com/12007/Taleban-accuses-Afghan-president-of.62075...

"After three successive outbursts blaming foreigners for last year's election fraud, acccusing western troops of meddling and finally threatening to join the Taleban, Afghan President Hamid Karzai suffered a fresh blow last night when the insurgents essentially told him to get lost.

'It's just a game he is playing,' said Taleban spokesman Zabiulla Mujahid. He is trying to show people he is not under the control of the Americans, but it is completely false. If he really wants to join the Taleban, first he should face justice. He should face justice for bringing foreign troops to Afghanistan. He should face justice for all the crime which has happened under his rule in Afghanistan, and for the corruption that is going on now. Then we'll decide whether we'll join with him or not.."

both are correct

Well we know that the US Military is not in Afghanistan to defeat "Al-Qa'eda" or stop terrorism. What we do know is that US elite pride themselves as running a country that is traditionally viewed as the world cop and world enforcer. What do they enforce? Western banking rules and expanded private property laws to benefit a wealthy handful few global elites.

The USSA is an empire on the wane, and especially so since the financial collapse. The global enforcers can ill afford to be seen as weak and ineffective in carrying out its imperialist military agenda against one of the weakest countries in the world militarily and economically speaking. I think Hillary Clinton coming to Canada to attempt to convince Canadians that our leaders are not stooges for Warshington was an act of desperation. Karzai is also desperate in his attempt to distance himself from his imperial handlers in Warshington.

Like all tin pot dictators he will be assassinated if he gets too out of control.  Of course it will be blamed on the Taliban and they will be happy to claim the kill even if they aren't involved.

CBC had someone on P&P last week saying Karzai is either mentally unstable or on drugs.

Siddiqui: Time for NATO to Face Facts - The Jig is Up

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/article/793145--time-for-nato-to-face-fac...

"What if Karzai has not gone off his rocker, is not cracking under pressure and not acting out wild mood swings, as alleged, but is, in fact, being smart? He has seen the writing on the wall: the jig is up on the NATO mission..."

Afghan President Hamid Karzai's erratic behavior of late, including suggestions he may join the Taliban, have a "corrosive impact" on Canadian troops, the Defence Minister says.

Just back from Afghanistan, Peter MacKay told The Globe and Mail today that was the message he delivered to two senior Karzai government ministers.

"I called for more constructive and active engagement. People need to see a more visible presence of the Afghan government in Kandahar province," Mr. MacKay told the Afghan officials, explaining the President's comments have a "corrosive impact on Canadian soldiers and citizens."

Quote:

Karzai knows the only way to end the Afghan conflict is to enfranchise the nation's Pashtun majority and its fighting arm, the Taliban. Political compromise with the Taliban is the only - and inevitable - solution.

But the Obama administration, misadvised by Washington neocons and other hardliners, is determined to "win" a military victory in Afghanistan (whatever that means) to save face as a great power and impose a settlement that leaves it in control of strategic Afghanistan.

Accordingly, the U.S. thwarted Karzai's peace talks by getting Pakistan, currently the recipient of $7 billion in U.S. cash, to arrest senior Taliban leaders sheltering there who had been part of the ongoing peace negotiations with Kabul.

It was Karzai's turn to be enraged. So he began openly defying his American patrons and adopting an independent position. The puppet was cutting his strings.

Karzai's newfound boldness was due to the fact that both India and China are eager to replace U.S./British/NATO domination of Afghanistan. India is pouring money, arms and agents into Afghanistan and training government forces. China, more discreetly, is moving in to exploit Afghanistan's recently discovered mineral wealth that, says Karzai, is worth $1 trillion, according to a U.S. government geological survey.

Karzai should read some history of American puppets who cut their strings.  It generally doesn't work out well for them. I doubt if he will personally survive to see the end game.
