babble is rabble.ca's discussion board but it's much more than that: it's an online community for folks who just won't shut up. It's a place to tell each other — and the world — what's up with our work and campaigns.
rr just told me his whole building was evacuated at work. And apparently people who live on high storeys felt it way worse than those of us close to the ground.
Sounds like Ottawa was hit bad, too.
Gotta love social media, huh?? Facebook and Twitter are going nuts.
It's a good thing Babble had the good sense to place a Moderator on the Left Coast. Could you imagine if an earthquake knocked all of the Centre of the Universe moderators out of action.
This is the biggest one I've felt and heard since Nov (I think) 1988 - that one was 5.7 centred in Saguenay. When I try to look it up on the government quake site, I get this message:
Then there was the smell of heather crushed and the roughness of the bent stalks under her head and the sun bright on her closed eyes and all his life he would remember the curve of her throat with her head pushed back into the heather roots and her lips that moved smally and by themselves and the fluttering of the lashes on the eyes tight closed against the sun and against everything and for her everything was red, orange, gold-red from the sun on the closed eyes, and it all was that color, all of it, the filling, the possessing, the having, all of that color, all in a blindness of that color. For him it was a dark passage which led to nowhere, then to nowhere, then again to nowhere, once again to nowhere, always and forever to nowhere, heavy on the elbows in the earth to nowhere, dark, never any end to nowhere, hung on all time always to unknowing nowhere, this time and again for always to now beyond all bearing up, up, up, and into nowhere, suddenly, scaldingly, holdingly all nowhere gone and time absolutely still and they were both there, time having stopped and he felt the earth move out and away from under them.
--Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1941)
Not bad. Try the balloon scene in Balthazar and Bluminda by the late Jose Saramago, or the scene in Kafka's The Castle involving the barmaid and "K" the Land Surveyor for more, and briefer, earthly delights.
You're so cynical. The Harper government believes in science and in maximizing information to the public, especially in times of potential disaster like these. Just have a look at the level of detail provided so soon after this earthquake:
It's a shame that Ernest lived too early to qualify for this award.
Secretly, I do admire Ernest. I read him, and it was good. I read him, and it was bad. But when it was bad, it was good. I stared into space. In the space, there was truth. The old man was there. The old woman was there. There they were. And we knew.
My etes are blurry right now from my appointment with the opthamalogist so I may not be reading correctly, but I think the Mope and Wail article said the quake was caused by those swingin' Senators in Ottawa having a party to celebrate the end of the session
quote:
On Parliament Hill, where the Commons has adjourned for the summer but the Senate was still in session, Senators felt the Red Chamber shake. Glass windows made a crunching noise, and ornate chandeliers swung.
Yup. We just had an earthquake. I was 5 floors up and it was a bit dramatic.
Felt it pretty strong in Ottawa too.
Damned terrierists! What will they do next?
Felt from Kitchener to Ottawa I've heard.
That's what happens in the Centre of the Universe (tm).
Was it strong enough to create new, verifiable, information on the physics of building collapse?
Yes -- I just posted the question at BnR too. Oshawegia had a good little shake there. Kittehs spooked.
Ha! I've heard as far away as Syracuse that they felt it too!
Well when the earth moves...

Crap and here I was sitting at my computer and didnt even notice
This is actually the first earthquake I've ever felt, I think. I usually miss them too!
Guess your building is solid!
Well my home office appears to be solid then ;o)
5.5
Ah, that's nothing compared to what we're expecting any time now in Vancouver.
It's a good thing Babble had the good sense to place a Moderator on the Left Coast. Could you imagine if an earthquake knocked all of the Centre of the Universe moderators out of action.
I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you're around
Is this what they mean by Diversity of Tactics?

Why does that seem funny?
Just more of Harper's cutbacks.
And she said, "Geez, those stupid stalks poking into my neck are annoying! Are you done yet?"

Pfft. This is a Hemingway novel. There are no shes.

OOPS!.....Excuse me.

hah, maybe just a pre-warning to the worlds leaders?
In my dreams, it could be so....
At first I thought it was a bomb - I was 5 floors up, and it was pretty dramatic.
Here's the webpage for this particular quake - it's downgraded to a 5.0, but still pretty impressive for around here:
