Who owns Canadian Media?
I'm trying to find out who owns what media in Canada.
I've come across a few sites, but nothing that easily breaks it down.
I want to know what corporations own what media. i.e. is McLeans and The Globe owned by the same people? Are all the news talk radio stations owned by the right wing?
Perhaps the best question would be what national news media is actually not right wing? (Dont say the Globe and Mail....

Media ownership in Canada one of world’s most concentrated
In Canada our corporate-friendly stooges in Ottawa follow the rule of the three ‘C’s’—concentration, convergence, and cross-ownership.
Thank you and funny enough, my interest was tweaked because of Mel Hurtig. I am just reading Mel Hurtigs "The Truth about Canada." His stats were from before 2007, and I knew there were changes since, so I was hoping to find new stats....and too be honest...in the form of quick facts.. Trying to explain all this to my kids....
Maclean's and the Globe are not "owned by the same people."
Thankfully, the Thomson family has retained control of the Globe's editorial position and it remains the last meaningful barrier to Harperite Hegemony in the Canadian press world.
Welcome to babble, Sharppoint. I've moved this topic to our "media" forum.
And I just found this:
Media Convergence, Acquisitions and Sales in Canada
The CBC put it together, and it's from September 2010. Looks like 16 companies own all the print (newspapers and magazines), television and radio media in the country. How sad is it that this is better than I expected to find?
Thanks Maysie. And Hurtig tells us to look in the business pages of our national newspapers to find information about media mergers, stock prices, and industry changes.
The BUSINESS PAGES, Fidel?
I get the local paper. It's as thin as a dime most days. The odd time I'll pick up an Ottawa Citizen and lug it home.
When your horse comes in, try the Globe, Fidel - the e edition if you have broadband (which I aspire to when my horse crosses the finish line). You get to understand what we're up against, that way. There are several libations available at LCBO to help alleviate the pain.
I find a mallet to the head is also effective. Or a fork.
Okay, Maysie, you got me.
But I won't even probe that imagery.
I don't find the Globe to slightly better than some. but that isn't saying much. Pretty much the only good media we had was CBC but that is now dead.
If you do some reading you will find the aspers don't own a thing anymore so they should be struck from that list. Then you can get into how its Bell, Rogers the Irvings, Telus, Shaw and Quebecor...by legal definition oligopoly in nearly all our telecommunications, media, and the internet.
Its sad.
