babble is rabble.ca's discussion board but it's much more than that: it's an online community for folks who just won't shut up. It's a place to tell each other — and the world — what's up with our work and campaigns.
Why we babble

So, rabble is fixing to make its annual report for 2010 (previous reports available here), and as always, there will be a section on babble which Maysie and I will write. We wanted, if possible, to include some quotes from babblers, accounting for why we continue to subject ourselves to this nonsense week after week.

Somehow I don't think Saturday night is the best time to get quotes about why we babble that are annual-report-worthy.

Why do I babble? Well nervousness I guess, sometimes its just due to too much alcohol.

Oh, and while I really like AQ's "Babble's a great place to post pre-fabricated opinions and have them framed as thoughts." I am hoping he will expand on that a little to include those situations where musings get tossed into the mix, and then defended as if they were deeply held convictions.
I think pre-fabricated is about right. I think that to have an original thought on the really important stuff is rare. I form my opinions based on a lot of second-hand ones. I try to pick the cleverest opinions and develop my own over time. I think most people do.
And I think this kind of interaction will expand in future. At some point discussion forums with video and audio will be common. So I don't think babblers are doing anything wrong or being anti-social. On the contrary, we are very sociable people who care what other people think and desire to share mainly political opinions and views on current events in general with each other. Because let's face it, not everyone you know outside of babble is willing to discuss more than work or the weather, sports scores etc, or what's going on outside their own three foot radius in general. And besides, there are no toastmasters meetings where I am.
I babble for the fashion tips.
i think it's a great place to debate current issues and gain some new perspective by communicating with people who might very well disagree with you. I'm constantly forced to look at things from a different perspective, consider new ideas and work through the pro's and con's of old ones.
Also, it's the only site of it's kind that i'm aware of that deals with things from a canadian left perspective and covers such a large variety of topics. I love how i can go from a forum on israel/palestine or canada's role in haiti to a forum on an artists responsibility to speak out or local media issues.

I babble because some of the smartest political writers in Canada hang out here, and I've basically learned everything I know from this lousy group of bums (except for the real meaning of Mulholland Dr. I did that myself).
I read this board on and off for the last few years, but never posted until a few months ago.
I quit another Canadian message board after it drifted to the right for a while and got sick of too many racist, homophobic, anti-worker comments and no moderation.
While some of the debates on here do tend to get a bit silly, I love that it helps me keep on top of Canadian news and I also like that one can find a wide variety of viewpoints ;)
