Think Tanks/Activist Groups/Politically Minded Young Folk

Does anyone from BC know of any groups I could join? I feel alienated holding the political beliefs I do in this world of dumbed-down, sound-bite style discourse. None of the young people I know have any interest in politics and they cannot stand politically charged conversations. During election time it's ok, but then it's simply a whole load of championing this party or that.

Maybe I should go back to school and take up poly sci, hehe. Cool

There are tons of groups here in Vancouver, MW: where are you located? There's the socialist collective, StopWar, and No One Is Illegal all are fairly radical groups with large-ish followings and diverse focuses. You could also considering joining the youth caucus of a political party, like the NDP, which is obviously quite active in BC. If it strikes your fancy, you could try the Kootenay School of Writing collective which is a group of radical (if insular and pretensious) poets and experimental writers. What did you have in mind?

I'm on Vancouver Island.

I'll definitely check those groups out. This is great stuff, thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction, Catchfire!

Hi, Manic Wombat, if any of the young people you know on vancouver island have some spare time and are into green research and helping 3rd world people. (Into doing stuff not just talking about it) I have 2 solar projects that need to be tested and repeated by someone else. The cone solar parabolic dish (part of the tracking solar accumulator project) and the solar design t-square and clam shaped reflectors which is about designing a better solar cooker for unattended use.  Unfortunately, I am rotten at documentation and many in the solar cooking community  are scared shitless of new stuff anyway.  My parabolic dish is a half dish (for a bunch of reasons) but the very idea of a half dish is unthinkable for many people.

I just got invited to put the cone solar on the the wiki at opensource ecology, That is the biggest (and most active doing real stuff) open source hardware develloper in the world. "The Global Village Construction Set (GVCS) is a modular, DIY, low-cost, high-performance platform that allows for the easy fabrication of the 50 different Industrial Machines that it takes to build a small, sustainable civilization with modern comforts".. I simply do not have the time to do a full day evaluation of the most recent version, (because the crappy spring put my masonry work way way behind, but it is fairly easy to make and works pretty damn good. I believe some people in some "hippy community" on the island could take this thing and really run with it. http://www.youtube.com/user/gaiatechnician is my channel on youtube. The cone solar is among the recent videos

Thanks, Brian
