From 2010

excerpt:

As he wrapped up his two-day trip to Greece, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu -- the highest ranking Israeli to visit the country -- said the two nations were "opening a new chapter."

He told reporters that he and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou had discussed military cooperation. An official in Netanyahu's entourage told Reuters these discussions "explored establishing greater cooperation between both countries' military industries and armies."

A Greek official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed they "talked about new forms of cooperation on defense and security issues" including the expansion of joint military exercises and sharing technological knowledge.

excerpt:

Netanyahu is the first Israeli Prime Minister to visit Greece, which only forged full diplomatic ties with the Jewish state in 1990, later than other European countries. Israel and Greece signed a defense cooperation agreement in 1994.

Why on earth did the Flotilla choose Greece as an embarkation point? That's what I don't get.

Jack Layton, Paul Dewar Asked Israel Not To Harm Canadians On Gaza Flotilla

It's good, but somehow I expected more. Anger and righteous indignation, perhaps.

So Coleman and Kneen were in kayaks when they were arrested!

We already knew about the Layton meeting with the Israeli ambassador a month ago, as reported upthread:

Layton wrote:
Earlier this week, I met with the Israeli Ambassador and urged the government of Israel to lift the blockade of Gaza. I also indicated that it was not New Democrat policy to support the flotilla but reiterated New Democrats’ concern for the safety of protesters and urged that the utmost caution be used. [emphasis added]

Layton and Dewar must be happy that their "socialist" pals in Greece made sure no harm would come to the Canadians at the hands of Israelis. Maybe they should talk to the Greek ambassador as well.

Wait... maybe they did!

A Pipeline of Injustice: Greek consular official admits that natural gas pipeline drives complicity in Gaza siege

by Charlotte Kates July 5, 2011

It has been widely reported and speculated that the reason for Greece's participation in the suppression of Freedom Flotilla Two may be found in its own economic situation - that the government of Prime Minister George Papandreou, pushing a devastating IMF/EU austerity plan on the Greek people against their will, is so desperate for international financial and economic support that it is willing to serve as the enforcement arm for Israel's illegal siege on Gaza.

Yesterday, in Vancouver, Canada, a Greek consular official, Georgios Ayfantis, confirmed that this is indeed the case.

In a conversation with a delegation of activists supporting the Tahrir, the Canadian Boat to Gaza, who entered the consulate demanding a meeting about the Freedom Flotilla, Ayfantis asserted that Greece's economic interests were at stake in stopping the Flotilla, saying that an undersea natural gas pipeline and a natural gas liquidizing plant in Crete were at stake.....

Open letter from Palestinian civil society to the social-democratic Greek government [excerpt]:

Quote:

The people of Gaza are not only in need of humanitarian aid because we are prevented from building our economy. We are not allowed to import raw materials or to export; our fishermen and farmers get shot at when attempting to fish or to harvest their crops. As a result of deliberate Israeli policy, 80 per cent of our people have become food aid dependent, our infrastructure is in shambles, and our children cannot imagine a day when they will know freedom.

Your offer to deliver the cargo of the Freedom Flotilla entrenches the notion that humanitarian aid will solve our problems and is a weak attempt to disguise your complicity in Israel's blockade.

We are so sorry not to accept your charity. The organizers and participants of the Freedom Flotilla recognize that our plight is not about humanitarian aid; it is about our human rights. They carry with them something more important than aid; they carry hope, love, solidarity and respect. Your offer to collude with our oppressors to deliver aid to us is totally REJECTED.

While it is clear that you have been under enormous political pressure to comply with the will of the Israeli regime, to collaborate with Israel in violating international law and legitimizing the siege, we refuse to accept your breadcrumbs. We crave freedom, dignity and the ability to make choices in our daily lives. We urge you to immediately reconsider and to let the Freedom Flotilla sail.

Breaking news about the Estelle:

Israeli naval vessels take control of Gaza boat

Several parliamentarians from different countries are on board, including former NDP MP Jim Manly, from Saskatchewan.

Here is a rabble piece published (ironically) today, by his partner Eva Manly:

Why former Canadian MP Jim Manly is on the Ship to Gaza

Quote:
Jim is on board the Estelle, and if there was room for another Canadian I would be there with him. There is no other place I would rather be now. May he come home safe.

Amen.

Just saw on CBC:  that piece of crap Netanyahu issued a press release claiming there is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and that if the people on this boat want to help, they should go to Syria, and that Israel will always act to protect her borders.  :mad2

"GAZA — Apple’s new iPhone 5 is selling well in the Gaza Strip despite inflated prices, reaching the Palestinian enclave via smuggling tunnels even before high-tech hub Israel next door.

The cutting edge smartphone is being snapped up for almost double what it costs in the United States, its price jacked up by middlemen on its circuitous delivery route from Dubai via tunnels linking the blockaded territory with Egypt.

The iPhone 5 will not be available until December from mobile operators in tech-mad Israel, which along with Egypt maintains a partial blockade of Gaza to prevent the entry of anything that could be used for military purposes.

But the phones have been available for a couple of weeks in Gaza and they were on display on Monday in three independent mobile stores in a one-block radius in downtown Gaza City.

Prices ranged from 4,500 Israeli shekels ($1,170) for the 16 gigabyte model to 5,700 ($1,480) for 64 gb.

“I ordered 30 and I’ve sold 20 so far,” said one dealer. “We can order as many as we want. But most people are waiting for the price to go down. They’re pretty expensive.”

The iPhone 5, launched last month, sells for US$650 and US$850 in the 16 and 64 gigabyte versions in the United States."

As I have repeated several times in several threads, one of the Israeli war-criminals involved in the Mavi Marmara attack. Brig-Gen Eden Atias, then Commander of IAFB Nevatim, and an officer with ' command and control'  responsibility, is now resident Israeli military attache to Canada. Although cited publicly by a Turkish intelligence report of those responsible, there has been a scrupulous silence maintained by Canadian media on Attias's significant role in the assault,.and even more curiously, by activists as well..even though Canadians were among those attacked.

The Estelle, led by Israeli Jewish activist Dror Feiler, who recently 'disinvited' ex US Army Colonel and solidarity activist Ann Wright from joining the Estelle voyage because of her support of Free Gaza Movement's Greta Berlin, has likely mediated the wrath of Israel from repeating their murderous Mavi Marmara barbarism. Nonetheless force was used here as well, and in international waters...

'Estelle Activist: We Were Tasered

"Activists who were detained aboard the Estelle, a Gaza-bound ship that was seized by the Israeli Navy on Saturday, accused the soldiers of using taser guns to overpower them, Ynet learned Sunday. The IDF said Saturday that the vessel was seized without the use of force..."

Mr Tea's information can only mean that despite Israel's  best efforts, Palestinians are capable of outsmarting the stupid zio criminal regime's best attempts to strangle and starve them..

Mr. Tea, your post at #105 is deliberately inflammatory and bears no relation to the discussion. I remind you again that babble and rabble.ca have anti-imperialist policies which harbour no quibbles over the fact that Israel's occupation of Gaza and the Palestinian people is unjust and criminal. If you continue with this sort of provocation, I'll ask you not to post in this thread again.

Here is the full statement issued by Jim Manly's son Paul:

Jim Manly must be released immediately!

Quote:
My mother, Eva Manly has said she would like the media to focus on the PALESTINIANS of GAZA that this story is not about my dad. My parents concern is with all Palestinians and with the courageous Israeli Jews who work with them for justice. They are the reason for my parents involvement in the Gaza Ark. My father, Jim spent some time with his youngest grandson just before leaving for GAZA. He said that this reinforced for him his conviction that ALL CHILDREN have a right to grow up healthy & with the possibility of a future. [...]

I want my father home.

I support my parents conviction to this cause but it is time for my father to come home. It is time for Prime Minister Harper to speak up for an honourable Canadian citizen (a retired United Church Minister and former Member of Parliament) and secure his release. If Canada and Israel are the close allies that the Prime Minister has said they are, then he should be able to secure my father release with one quick phone call.

I share NDPP's disgust for the craven cowardice of the federal NDP on this matter. It is moments like these - not canned sound bytes during Question Period, or platform promises - which show people's worth.

Son of detained ex-MP says NDP has lost its way

Quote:
“The NDP and the CCF (the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, the NDP’s predecessor party) before it took unpopular positions,” Paul Manly said.

“The CCF was opposed to the detention of Japanese-Canadians during the Second World War and the confiscation of their property, and the NDP was opposed to the War Measures Act” in Quebec in 1970.

“They took unpopular stands. And now I think they’re being very cautious, and obviously the new leader has his opinions and policies on Palestine and so, you know, my own MP — my father’s MP — wouldn’t speak out publicly this weekend,” he said, referring to Jean Crowder.

He said NDP deputy leader Libby Davies, once an outspoken defender of Palestinian rights and a critic of Israel, has been “muzzled and whipped” by Mulcair.

“So yeah, I’m disappointed,” the younger Manly told The Vancouver Sun.
