Federal NDP leadership candidates visiting BC

I propose this thread to be specifically dedicated to listing upcoming BC appearances of federal NDP leadership candidates. This is probably best in the Canadian politics section because it's federal, even though it's about one region of the country.

Tomorrow November 3rd, we have a confluence of two politicians in one evening, one after the other:

Mixer with Paul Dewar

03 November · 17:30 - 19:00 Common room - King Edward Village 1432 Kingsway (at Knight)

Pub Night with Peggy in Vancouver

03 November · 19:00 - 21:00
The Railway Club
579 Dunsmuir Street
Vancouver, BC

I am guessing a lot of people will hop up from one event and go straight to the other. Interesting that the Dewar event is in Vancouver-Kingsway (Don Davies hasn't declared support for anyone, has he?), and the Nash event is in Vancouver Centre (Hedy Fry's riding, NDP came 2nd with Karen Shillington). AFAIK none of the events have been in Libby Davies' Vancouver East, possibly because she has already declared support for Topp.

Candidates are going to go where they can draw the most people, look the best, get a good price for the venue. Optics of who the MP is supporting or might be supporting is going to be secondary. And complex anyway. Things like, you dont want to force the hand of an MP you know favours you, but does not want that circulating, etc.

Easier outside the big city cores where there isnt much choice of where to go. Even in Metro Halifax [4 seats], I could not read anything form where Brain Topp went. Mind you, everyone here is keeping their inclinations zipped.

Hopefully we will get reports on tonights gigs.

The timing of the events shows someone is playing traffic cop. It might be just the two campaigns. But here, Megan Leslie is doing that.

Thanks for the tip on Cullen. I won't be available for that one - but I am sure he will be making other future appearances in the biggest city of his home province :)

I was impressed by both Nash and Dewar. But I do have to remark that the energy in the room was incredible for Nash. It didn't hurt, though, that a major union convention was in town, and a contingent of people associated with that showed up to listen to her. There was a notable queer contingent in the room, which culminated in a group outing to the Fountainhead that included Nash, and Rabble's own Duncan Cameron.

This is going to be quite an interesting race, that's for sure.

Interesting; Ian from Terahertzatheist had almost the exact opposite impression.

His take on Dewar: http://terahertzatheist.ca/2011/11/04/ndpldr-paul-dewar-in-vancouver/

His take on Nash: http://terahertzatheist.ca/2011/11/04/ndpldr-peggy-nash-in-vancouver/

Indeed, I read that. Ian & I took the bus together from one meeting to the other. There is definitely a consistent following of faces I see at each candidate meeting. The members clearly want to get to know their choices better.

I just got an e-mail from Jan O'Brien at the BCNDP.

----

The 50th Anniversary Convention of the BC NDP is less than four weeks away. Here at provincial office, preparations are in full swing, and we’re looking forward to a great Convention.

Today, I’m pleased to announce that the first candidates town hall of the Federal NDP Leadership race will take place on Saturday afternoon at the BC NDP Convention.

We’ve invited all Federal NDP Leadership candidates to take part in the town hall. The event will be open to delegates. Members of the public will also be able to attend the event for a nominal charge. The town hall will give all candidates an opportunity to speak, and to take questions from delegates and members of the public.

You can still register to become a delegate to the BC NDP convention by registering online at bcndp.ca/convention.

Tickets for non-delegates will be available at the door.

For more information, visit www.bcndp.ca/convention

I hope you can be a part of this historic convention.

-Jan

JAN O’BRIEN
PROVINCIAL SECRETARY

PS: Thanks to strong registration, we’ve extended the early bird delegate fees for another week. Register as a delegate right now at bcndp.ca/convention.

----

So, this is pretty damn exciting news! Vancouver gets to be the very first place where all of the candidates gather in one room and face an audience.

Apparently not the first

As noted elsewhwere, the Topp website lists "leaders debate" Dec 4 Ottawa.

No details given yet.

At any rate, the schedule seems to be filling out- whether sponsored by the federal party or others.

Hah okay I stand corrected. But the first "candidates' town hall".

Looks like Don Davies is not endorsing any one candidate - here it says he's hosting Nathan Cullen, which would be the second leadership candidate who has had a meet&greet in his riding. The first was Paul Dewar; Davies himself was not present but his wife was, and she said he'd be there if it weren't for an inconvenient flight time.

Don Davies, MP for Vancouver Kingsway, offers you a unique opportunity to meet Nathan Cullen - currently the only NDP leadership candidate from British Columbia.

Capacity is limited. RSVP here: http://donandnathan.eventbrite.com/

In 2003, Nathan decided he’d heard enough from his local Conservative MP. So he ran for the NDP in the riding of Skeena—Bulkley Valley, which is about the size of Norway. He won the 2004 election—making him the only leadership candidate to defeat an incumbent Tory MP. By working with others, and taking a new approach to politics, Nathan has increased his margin of victory in each of the three elections since.

Join us! You'll have a chance to connect with Nathan over a drink, and hear his vision for the country.

6:00 pm - Doors open
6:30 pm - Short program with messages from Don and Nathan, followed by mix & mingle

*********************

I went to Brian Topp's meeting in Burnaby yesterday. There was a decent number of people although it wasn't exactly packed. Which is strange because Rabble's Twitter account announced "Former BC MP Bill Siksay announces his support for @briantopp at jam-packed Burnaby event"... well jam-packed is a flat-out lie. There were at least a dozen empty seats and the layout of the event only used about half the space available in the room. Nic_Slater tweeted "Standing room only in Burnaby BC for @BrianTopp next leader of the #NDP", to which I commented about empty seats... and lo and behold, today that tweet is no longer on the stream :P

Not that the Twitter response was really the highlight of the event, but it just seemed odd to me that people were putting disinformation out onto social media.

Topp had a lot of great ideas and told some nice stories about his time in Quebec and SK, but I did find myself getting sleepy. He seems to give very heavy speeches that don't really energize the listener. He clearly knows his stuff, and he's someone you'd clearly want working on your team (unless, perhaps, you are Mulcair) but I don't see him as a top-tier leader.

BEARS FOR MULCAIR: Tom visits Davie Village!
Public event
    Tuesday, 21 February 2012
    16:00 until 17:30

Tom Mulcair, candidate for the Federal NDP Leadership, visits Davie Village in the heart of Vancouver's West End!

Looks like Mulcair's BC team is trying to balance out the mass devotion of gay men to Peggy Nash. :)
