White People, You Will Never Look Suspicious Like Trayvon Martin
When you weigh 250 lbs, are behind the wheel of an SUV and are packing a handgun and the other guy is 100 lbs lighter, on foot and packing a bag of candy and bottle of iced tea, it's pretty difficult to see where "self defence" would have come in.
And to think this racist tragedy ouccured in a county named after a First Nation forced off their lands.
Racism runs so deep in white western culture, it's hard to imagine erradicating it, especially in this new era where demonizing and killing "those people" has become a duty and right to protect values of entitlement.
Looking and condemning racism, one incident at a time, doesn't seem to help at all sadly enough. But I have to say that the whole ridiculous hoodie focus was tackled by caller/e-mailer to the CBC The Current pretty spot on: justifying killing a black man for wearing a hoodie is akin to justifying a woman's rape for wearing a short skirt.
Much of the mainstream media comment sections following articles relating to this crime, especially the US based outlets, are similar to the type of thought processes found in the Turner Diaries.
C'mon, don't failsafe the "other"
What do you think? At least "manslaughter"? No? I'm out. So sad. I dun know what to choose? Forever Young? Thinking...
The murder of Trayvon Martin in a gated community in Florida has dramatized the depths of racism in U.S. society. Trayvon was young, Black and male--that was enough for neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman to decide he was "suspicious," to stalk him and eventually to pull the trigger.
African American families understand that Trayvon's fate could happen to their own children. That's why so many young Black men remember the time they had "the talk"--when family or friends tried to prepare them for dealing with racism in general and the police in particular.
Here, SocialistWorker.org contributors Derron Thweatt, Khury Petersen-Smith and Brian Jones remember their own experiences with "the talk"--and how the experience of racism shaped their lives.
I have felt like Trayvon Martin. Many many times while walking at night, being pulled over by police, being told that I'm not supposed to ‘be.' My ‘being' in a space has caused questions, concerns, suspicions. In the back of my mind I always wondered if there would be a reckoning. If my ‘being' would become so intolerable to someone that they would try to end my existence rather than engage in a conversation. The only difference between me and Trayvon is that I am still here and he is not. Still, the question lurks around the subconscious when I walk home every night from the subway and a police car slows down alongside me. The squad car slows down. Eyeballs examine my ‘being,' noticing any signs of anger, insanity, guilt. I continue walking, pretending to be oblivious. In most cases this is the best sign of innocence: by pretending to not notice.
Unlike myself, Trayvon physically noticed the accusation. He noticed the suspicion and dared to walk toward it. Stare at it, as he spoke with his girlfriend over the phone. Curious, as to who could be staring at him so intently he took a step in Zimmerman's direction. Staring directly at George Zimmerman before quickly walking away.
"..It is a system that is predicated upon the dehumanization of all those who are not white. It is a system used by the elite; the folks in control of politics, commerce and society - global society. They're able to do that by systematically pitting us against one another, colonizing and the whole nine. This keeps it in place..."
So a hispanic male shoots a black youth and it is automatically a racial issue? People need to leave their agendas at the door. Did this youth deserve to get shot? No. Did the person GZ do the right thing? No. Should he have been charged with murder? YES. Was it a racial shooting? NO. It was a dumbass with a gun who wanted to play cops and robbers.
I find it funny how no one has mentioned that one of Mr. Zimmerman's best friends is back. This is a guy who made a very bad desicion and should pay for it. It is not a black and white isuue as the Rev Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson would like everyone to believe to promote their own agendas and get face time in the media.
It's unfortunate that the racial angle is overshadowing this tragic event.
Hahahaah @ F55. Anyway, bigguy1 has become the latest in a long line of sacrifices on this, the most holiest of days. Prayer service can now cntinue as usual.
"A jury in Dedham Mass, saw video this week of an 18-year old boy being tied down and shocked 31 times as he screamed in pain. The footage was presented by lawyers of Andre McCollins, who is suing the Judge Rotenberg Center for developmentally disabled students, which treated him in part by attaching electrodes to his body and shocking him. The incident, recorded on video took place in 2002 after McCollins refused to take off his coat.."
Being Florida, the Zimmerman trial will be televised. The new lawyer is trying to put a lid on the media speculation and what can be shown. I've watched most of the coverage so far.
this is pretty much the same thing as the klan. A bunch of armed, aggressive racist white guys hunting down and murdering innocent black people.
Back then theyd say he looked at a white girl, now they just say he's "looking about"....
Hoodeet (JW)
Actually, there's another take on this story. George Zimmerman's mother is a Latina immigrant.
This is a red herring. Anyone with an understanding of racial politics in Florida wil understand that having a Latino background might be a contributor to the racist profiling Zimmerman did.
In Florida, where the Hispanic population is, or is descended from, right-wing anti-Castro supporters of Batista, Latinos are members of the economic and political ruling class. They have a great deal of influence in Congress and the Senate, and run much of South Flordida. At a more grassroots level, the animosity of Hispanics towards African Americans is well-documented and supported by the Republican government in that state.
A judge on Friday revoked the bond of the neighborhood watch volunteer charged with murdering Trayvon Martin and ordered him returned to jail within 48 hours, saying George Zimmerman and his wife misled the court about how much money they had available when his bond was set at $150,000.
Prosecutors claim Zimmerman had $135,000 available that had been raised by a website he set up. Zimmerman's wife, Shellie, testified at the bond hearing in April that they had limited funds available since she was a nursing student and Zimmerman wasn't working.
"He can't sit back and obtain the benefit of a lower bond based upon those material falsehoods," said Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester when he made his ruling.
Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said the fact that Zimmerman and his wife never used the money for anything indicated "there was no deceit." Since his release in late April, Zimmerman has been staying at an undisclosed location for his safety.
Prosecutor Bernie De la Rionda described the Zimmermans' testimony as "misleading."
"This court was led to believe they didn't have a single penny," said De la Rionda. "It was misleading and I don't know what words to use other than it was a blatant lie."
PLus he deliberately hid a second passport with his wife's help. The judge has recommended his wife be charged. It was funny to watch him go on and on about their misdeeds in hiding things, even discussing them in prison recorded phonecalls

It's Racism 101, Mr Tea. As American as apple pie.
Black man in a hoodie = dangerous. No exceptions.

Yes, laine. This photo was circulating on FB that expresses exactly that.

Probably because none of us even knew one of his best friends was away.

Zimmerman must surrender; bond revoked
I'm not sure which is more disturbing - that he could raise $130,000 or that the bond was set at only $150,000.
