What can be said is that Harper is certainly closer to fascist than the ndp to socialist - or even social-democrat..

I find it odd that when some people have a hard time believing that  political democracies are every bit as capable of monstrous actions as totalitarian states.

But anyway, that's a matter for another thread.

And Tommy Douglas was the first western world politician to denounce Adolf Hitler.

Herr Steveler will want to avoid mentioning that, too.

Ah, the early days of Reform, when they attracted neo-Nazis, referred to by Tom Flanagan as "bugs" and had to chase members from the caucus that had less enlightened thoughts about homosexuals than Rick Santorum. I don't miss those days.

I was kind of joking about that, since we've probably revisited that question a dozen times. I know it's never going to get solved.

I only mention it here because this whole thing started with Harper using Godwinisms and half-truths.

NDP soft on Genghis Khan? Twitterverse mocks Harper's Hitler gaffe

Quote:
Here's a list of some of the choicest tweets in response to the prime minister's Hitler crack:

- The leader of the NDP couldn't even be bothered to stop the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

- The NDP was the second shooter on the grassy knoll.

- The NDP traded Wayne Gretzky.

- It is well known that the #ndp supported the assassination of Julius Caesar.

- The NDP kidnapped the Lindbergh baby.

- The NDP stole Christmas, not the Grinch.

- The NDP refused to come to the aid of men when Mordor invaded Gondor.

Quote:
"It was frightful. I came back and warned my friends about the great German bombers roaring over the parade of self-propelled guns and tanks, Hitler standing there giving his salute, with Goering and the rest of the Nazi bigwigs by his side. There was no doubt then that Hitler was simply using Spain as a dress rehearsal for attacks on other nations." (Douglas, The Making of a Socialist (p.108))

These were mine-- so sad they did not get the "choicest tweet designation"
The NDP screwed the world up into a ball when it was working perfectly well flat.
The NDP convinced Eve to eat the apple and then taxed back half of it.

There is nothing to disprove either of these theories. At least the NDP existed when those events occurred.

Humourful artical on the Hitler thing. Love the all NDP volunteers are time travellers part. Although if only it was true, it'd boost party membership numbers for sure.

Banking with hitler BBC History Channel

While WW II raged on, there were British and American bankers who continued doing business with Hitler's regime.

And big businesses like International Nickel Company, Ltd(joint US-Canadian) supplied nickel and all manner of material aid to the Nazis for armoured vehicles and other weapons.

Fascism should more appropriately be referred to as corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power. - Il Duce

A really interesting study would be a list of all the 0.1% families from the US and Germany who supported Hitler when he was on his rise to power.  I'll bet you the same families are still on the 0.1% list.

You mean Thyssen, Krupp, Allianz, Topf und Soehne, Siemens, and Bayer (and of course, Ford and General Electric).

And of course, there is volkswagen, which was a shell game created by Hitler as a people's car manufacturer, but suddenly switched to making tanks.

He didn't get immediate support actually, In the early days he was just one of a number of horses people were putting their money on.

I think I read in William Shirer's book that even right up until he walked into Alsace, his control was not consolidated. If the Allies had taken a stand against him at that point, his financial backers and the army would have stepped away.

German and American industrialists must have known about the Versailles Treaty and that Hitler was in violation of it when building battleships and tanks in the 1930s. Churchill knew and so did Stalin. All of Europe knew that Hitler was re-arming Germany.

Industrialists backed Hitler because they were afraid that any of half a dozen or so socialist and communist parties were poised for election in Germany. Elsa Bruckmann arranged for a meeting between Hitler and Emil Kirdorf, a right wing fanatic and capitalist. Hitler promised not to implement any of the NSDAP 25 point plan. When they knew Hitler was as right wing as themselves, they backed him financially. The Road to Resurgence pamphlet was for German industrialist eyes only, but the Nazis had friends in North America before, during, and after the war.

Hitler could have invaded Europe without a lot of support but not without the help of Henry Ford, General Motors, Studebaker. The likes of Krupp, Thyssen, Harriman, Prescott Bush, Ford, IG Farben etc were betting on Hitler well into late 1942. Jewish immigrants were barred from entering North America while, at the same time, American industrialists needed special U.S. government authorization to deal with Nazi Germany.

Montagu Norman and a British-American banking clique financed Hitler early on and ensured his rise to power every step of the way. They advised Hitler in the late 20's to drop his anti-Semitic rants because it wasn't winning support among Germans.

When was the last chance to stop WW II? Hans Oster was convinced Hitler was evil and needed to be stopped after the night of the long knives in 1934.

But Britain's conservative Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain said that the conspirators were anti-Nazis who were not to be trusted.
