NATIVE INDIAN RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL ARREST - KINNEY EXTRADITED FROM THAILAND

March 2, 2007 - Gordon Irvin KINNEY, age 65, is back in Canada and in police custody after being extradited from Thailand to stand trial on charges of sexual abuse arising out of the Native Indian Residential School investigation.

KINNEY was charged with three counts of Indecent Assault on a Male and two counts of Gross Indedcency in June 2002 as a result of incidents that occured between 1964 and 1969 at the St. Mary's Native Indian Residential School located in Mission BC. KINNEY could not be located and a Canada-wide Warrant was issued for his arrest. Investigators were able to track KINNEY to his new home in the Kingdom of Thailand and BC Crown Counsel agreed to extradite him.

KINNEY was arrested at his home in Chonburi, Thailand by members of the Royal Thai Police Immigration Unit on August 2, 2006 and has been in custody ever since. On December 14, 2006, a Thai Court ordered that KINNEY be returned to Canada.

Two members of the "E" DIvision Major Crime Section flew to Bangkok, Thailand on February 25, 2007. KINNEY was turned over to Canadian Police on March 2, 2007 and flown to Canada. He is currently in police custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance in Abbotsford Provincial Court at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007.

RECENT BACKGROUNDER:

On August 2, 2006, Gordon Irvin KINNEY was arrested by members of the Royal Thai Police Immigration Unit on Canadian Sexual Assault charges. Following an extensive investigation by members of the Native Indian Residential School Task Force in June 2002, a Canada-wide warrant had been issued for KINNEY's arrest on three counts of indecent assault on a male and two counts of gross indecency. These charges relate to sexual abuse that occurred at the St. Mary's Native Indian Residential School located in Mission, BC between 1964 and 1969.

Task Force investigators were able to determine that KINNEY left Canada in December 1999 and was believed to be living in Thailand. RCMP "E" Division Major Crime investigators, working together with RCMP Liaison Officers in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, as well as the Royal Thai Police and the Philippine National Police, were able to track KINNEY down to an apartment complex in Chonburi, Thailand, which resulted in the 65-year old man’s arrest yesterday.

KINNEY is currently being held for extradition to Canada.
