PQ, Liberals condemn ADQ anti-immigration campaign

The ADQ is rebuffing accusations of racism made about posters used in the party's ad campaign for an upcoming byelection.

The posters link the decline of French in Montreal to increased immigration.

Parti Quйbйcois and Liberal candidates slammed the ADQ for putting up the posters in two Montreal-area ridings where byelections will be held in May.

Former Bloc MP Maka Kotto, who is running for the PQ in Bourget, called the ADQ's campaign "lepйniste," alluding to France's inflammatory right-wing politician Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Immigration Minister Yolande James accused the ADQ of fuelling xenophobia at a time when Quebecers need to be better educated about how newcomers contribute to the province.

Meanwhile, the MSM continue to play the same dirty role that they began in 2006, in concert with Mario Dumont, when they invented the "reasonable accommodation" frenzy:

quote:

Criticism about the ad campaign comes as a new poll suggests more than half of Quebecers agree with an ADQ immigration policy that calls for lower caps on newcomers. ...

The ADQ's immigration policy is resonating with a majority of Quebecers even as the party loses favour overall among voters.

The same poll suggests Dumont's popularity continues to slide, hitting 18 per cent support, compared to 33 per cent for the Parti Quйbйcois, and 37 per cent for the Quebec Liberals.

So, while the little Mussolini Dumont continues to drop from his pinnacle, the "pollsters" go deep into people's psyche to say, "well, they're all racist scum at heart, so there's a need for Dumont's racist policies - maybe someone else will pick up where he is failing us?"

That is utterly disgusting racism - it is also a lie, or gross manipulation of the truth. A higher percentage of newcomers here is fluent in French than ever before - but according to statistics, Maka Kotto would not be counted as a Francophone because of course his first language was a language of his native country, Cameroon. That is also the case for Maghrebis, Lebanese and even many Haitians.

It is important for all progressives not to let this shit fester. Franзoise David of has spoken out against this crap along with the related attempts to get mums "back into the home".

I think it is important to have "old-stock" QuйbecoisE spokespersons denounce this racist filth, Franзoise David and not just Amir Khadir.

Indeed, Mario Dumont is channelling old Jean-Marie Le Pen.

"I think it is important to have "old-stock" QuйbecoisE spokespersons denounce this racist filth..."

I think it's important for the majority of Quebecers to denounce such positions. I'm not sure I understand why you place an emphasis on old stock Quebecers as the important voice in this debate?
Does the voice of the old out-weigh the new, in some way?
Why do we need to make such a distinction between residents of the province?

Because opposing racism is EVERYBODY's business. I know you are being disingenuous, but I don't care - this is an important point to make - it is not just for newcomers or "visible minorities" (yes, I know, horrid expression) to speak out against racism.

Actually, I'm trying to understand your point of view. Thanks for the clarification.

Maybe the PQ will. After all, 52% of their supporters polled agree that Quebec should not be accepting more immigrants than they are now.

Just out of curiosity, do we know Maka Kotto`s mother tongue?

The same "poll" said the same thing about 51% of all Quebeckers. Observations like yours, together with those of Dumont and the MSM, generate and maintain unnecessary tensions between Quebeckers. If you really believed what these polls said - rather than seeing them as one of the causes rather than the effects of the problem - why would you want to live in such a society?

I must be in the minority then; I don`t even watch TV(A). I don`t want to continue with things as they are, which is why I oppose racism and ethnocentrism in my province wherever and whenever I can. Even as a WASP male, I am allowed to.

"400 demonstrators lend their voice to the invisibles: Migrant workers. Protesters demand 'legal status for all'"

quote:

Almost without exception, they spend their days and nights toiling deep in the shadows.

They are among the quiet ones who silently prepare your restaurant lunch, vacuum your office, wash your dirty laundry, mind your children or pick the locally grown carrots or apples on which you snack.

Yesterday, for a change, they weren't invisible.

A boisterous, chanting crowd of more than 400 demonstrators gave them voice in the Montreal neighbourhood where many of them - furtively - work and live ...

Todd, were you able to make it there? I was just too tired after May Day, standing around in the drizzle beforehand... I do have several friends who attended. I'm pleased to see such a sympathetic article!
